BMW makes great cars, why wouldn't their bikes be the same quality?

I think it's a great looking bike

They are great bikes and cars for the most part. I just don't want to deal with German over-engineering and the cost and time required to do all of the required maintenance. I once had a K75, which was a nice little machine, but once a year or every 10,000 miles the entire rear end had to be disassembled, cleaned of grease and replaced with new BMW (of course) grease BY HAND or the damn thing would supposedly fall apart in short order at great cost to fix. Didn't the damn Germans INVENT the Zerk fitting?

Nor do I care for the overbearing attitude of many BMW owners. It can be even more obnoxious than a Harley rider.

Feduke, you are (mostly) correct on all points.

While BMW bikes do tend to be over-engineered (which is the trend for most modern bikes), you've gotta give them credit; they're getting better and better at creating extremely low-maintenance bikes with lower and lower service intervals. Numbers tell the story: there are SO many BMW motorcycles running around with super-high miles and running as strongly as the day they rolled out of the dealer's lot... some with very little in the way of repair other than regular service. Sure, you can't throw a virtual rock on the internet without running into a story about some poor sap's final drive failure, but for every one of those, there are probably thousands and thousands of bikes you never hear about because the owners are too busy putting on miles.

Overbearing attitudes? Yeah... I've bumped up against a few of those nimrods. But again, for every one of them, I've also met many BMW owners/riders as friendly and accepting of other bikes as anyone else. Those guys who tool around head-to-toe in BMW Motorrad gear are pretty much exactly the same as the guys who tool around head-to-toe in Harley Davidson gear: People trying to find indentity and acceptance in the pack. I've been on the road for thousands and thousand of mile on VARIOUS bikes over the past several years and have snubbed by "Bikers" AND by "Motorrads". It used to piss me off, now I just ignore them. But, during those same thousands and thousands of miles, I've also had the privilege of talking to an extremely large variety of very friendly motorcyclists on an extremely large variety of motorcycles. The common denominator? While they are all generally interested in what you're riding and will ask this or that about your bike, they mostly want to know where you're heading, where you're coming from, what you've seen, and how much fun you're having out there on the open road.

Now... I think I'm going for an early Saturday morning ride while my lovely wife and lovely pup sleep in.

Oh no...
I am on BMW #5 and I hope I fall into the category of just loving the car for the sheer thrill of feeling like the car is an extension of my body. I keep going back to them cuz the performance and the precision is awesome. My wife keeps imploring me to trade cars with her cuz the thing just puts a smile on her face whenever she rides it...
Now for the bikes... another matter. I have tried to really like them but I find the styling just unattractive for me and way overpriced. For that matter I also find the Triumph touring bikes equally unattractive. As for obnoxiousness - that unseemly trait goes with the rider and he is most likely obnoxious with or without a bike. But I do think BMW's (at least the autos) are largely and unfairly associated with arrogant yuppie types.... after all they are buying a car from a company that employs MIT and Ivy League grads just to analyze the sounds of the chimes in the vehicles to make sure the buyer doesn't just like the car - but LOVE the car.

I know what you mean. I have two Audi's, but I've been in several BMW's and it's the same kind of thing - the German engineering. I've owned a lot of cars in my life, but in 2003 I purchased my first German car and now I'm hooked.

I have not been on a BMW motorcycle, tho. I never thought I could ride a sport touring bike (too much knee bend) so I never bothered. I rode the Trophy simply out of curiosity (my dealer had a demo) and discovered that it's much more relaxed compared to the two other sport touring bikes I've been on - Concours and FJR. I suppose at that time I could have taken one (BMW) out and compared it to the Trophy, but I have so much Triumph branded crap that I just bought the Trophy.
