| Posted : 08 Apr 2010 - 07:51 Post title : Birdy's Modified His Tail Light Setup | | OK - so I thought I'd save myself a few hundred Francs and modify the Tail Light setup myself!!!
It would have taken only about 1 hour - IF THE BLOODY BOLTS under the fender weren't soooo hard to get back in! I ended up taking the rear fender off completely (which I recommend to do).
I cut the original plastic fitting as I liked how they fitted together with the indicator. My dealer offers a 're-location' modification, but they remove the plastic completely and then install small LED indicators (blinkers) - which I personally think doesn't look good. So that's why I 'knocked-up' my own design.
I'm not too happy with the LED Plate Lights being visible (small oblong black-box above number plate) - but it's just my first design!
I now know exactly what to do - and next winter I'll place a smaller LED light under the fender - out of sight

Any chance of telling me where I can order one of those number plate lights and what sort it is. I'm at work for the next six weeks and would like to organize it so it's waiting when I get home.
Also is the a link or any pictures of the relocation setup of your dealers. Sounds interesting. I really want to do something to tidy the back of mine up.
Cheers Steve

Actually I got the lights from a local motorbike shop (Moto Mader AG ). They cost me SFr 19.00 for a set of 2 '3 LED' lights.
Here is a link to my dealer and their 'custom' photos - BUT, he's in Switzerland! I think thats a few miles away from where you are!
Here's some images from my dealers set-up:
They also did a custom setup - but I didn't like this one either. The brake light is integrated in the blinker lights!?!?
I'll have a look at the packaging from the LED lights this evening - maybe there's an internet address on it. I can remember seeing that they were 'produced in china'.
Will get back later this (european) evening.

Or was that something the dealer did on their modified set-up? BTW- looking good on your home-grown design!

It's better, but could be better still with a slicker solution for the LED. I don't care much for M91's solutions either as the small indicators just don't do it for me, though I do like the completely stripped fender. I may have to start playing around more with my ideas of relocating the indicators completely down to the swing arm. BTW, is there an issue with side mounted plates in your neck of the woods?

Ummm - what to do... Think I'll give it more 'thunking about' over this seasons riding and see what other ideas come out.

I finally get my license plate tomorrow and propably pay them a visit next week if the dust has settled down by then (gravel and dust everywhere on the roads).
It is for Intruder but their website says it is suitable for other models too (shock mount).

There's also thin stainless version available but I like the bulky one better (maybe?). Thoughts might change when I see them next week.
Edit : Here's one version on HD; It's not that bad. Finnish plate is so freakin' big that it's hard to make side mount that looks good with it.

I like your set up a lot better. So that's what I'll try and do first. I was hoping your dealer set up was something like the one I saw for the V Rod at Custom Dynamics. This is the web page Link . I apologise for the link but I really battle with computers.
BLOODY HELL that is a big number plate though...

I guess they want the police to be able to read your plate from a mile away. OBTW I see you changed out your tank badge. I have mine on order. Did you heat yours in an oven to bend them or did you use a heat gun. If you used an oven, what temp. did you set it at?

We have the same problem re plate size here in the UK. But it gets worse... with ANPR ( Link ) the police choppers cameras can automatically read your plate (from 2000ft high) and check your speed, insurance, MOT, outstanding parking / traffic fines, etc.

To tell you the truth - I wasn't around when the garage put them on! I believe they didn't heat (bend) them at all - as one side is slightly arching out (3 mm away - but no problem).
The fact being that I'll be re-spraying the Bird means that I'm not too worried about the badges just at the moment. But once the final paint is done - then things HAVE to be right!
