Gotta Tell Ya Guys organising these long distance rides from "Someone's Bright Idea to Home Sweet Home" really tests the metal. Now I don't wants Ya's to get the wrong idea about us but some have said. "You guys are a Drinking Club with a Bike Problem> isn't it supposed to be the other way around"

Day1: Saturday May11th: Mackay to Cardwell.560Klms
The ride got underway at approx 8.30am from the Shell Norside Service Station with12 riders leaving Mackay and on this day Bob was the lead rider for the day and Jim Schibrowski had volunteered to go Tail End Charlie for the complete ride as Jim is an accredited first aider. Our first scheduled stop was at Proserpine under the trees adjacent to the BP Service Station for a leg break,It should be noted that the refuelling stops for this complete ride were all based on the fuel capacity of the Bonneville's on the ride and this was explained at the pre ride meeting as they have a ride distance before reserve of around 240klms so it was planned that way to ensured they refuelled at or around the 200 to 210/200 Klm mark. It was then onto the Caltex Roadhouse at Bowen for our first refuelling and refreshment stop. With this out of the way it was then off to Townsville for our next refuel and lunch break, Or should I say towards Townsville for all riders except for one who thought He might make a detour into Bowen for no particular reason ?? Errrrrrrrragh, This caused a bit of a scurry for the Myself and Andy & Jim as we had to go looking for him into Bowen,Once we had him in line it was then off after the main group and we literally "Rode Our Arses Off" finally catching them up approximately half way to Home Hill at Guthalungra,We then rode into Ayr with a few people topping up with fuel and having another leg stretch before we carried onto our scheduled refuelling stop at the Woolworths Caltex Servo at Cluden just south of the Townsville ring road entry point where most riders filled up,with that out of the way we then found our way to Lloyd Dornbuschs daughters residence in Townsville where Lloyd, Maurie & Sue had prepared lunch and refreshment for us.After stopping there for just over an hour we then headed out towards Ingham and then finally onto our first overnight stay at Cardwell where we arrived at 4.30pm and were joined by Lloyd Harmsworth who had a late departure from Mackay and finally caught up at the road works road block at the bottom of the Cardwell Range. The amount of work being done on the Cardwell range is really astounding and will be really great when it is finished supposedly later this year.We stopped at the Beach Side Motel which proved to be an excellent choice of accommodation as the Owners treated us like royalty and nothing was too much problem with all bike secured under the Foyer of the Motel they also provided an area just outside where we could enjoy some refreshments and nibblies from Lloyds Support Trailer before catching a courtesy bus down town to the Marine Hotel for dinner,So far the trip had been dry with any rain happening literally 5 minutes in front of us.

The first nights pre dinner drinks at the Beach Front Motel in Cardwell, another Biker Friendly Establishment.

Day2: Sunday May12th: Cardwell to Mossman.260Klms
We departed Cardwell at around 8.30 and today Glen Bradley was the nominated lead rider for the day.and headed for our first planned stop in Cairns,However this was to be broken by a quick detour into a Roadhouse outside Innisfail for a few members to catch up on some breakfast, with that out of the way we headed to Cairns and once again escaped getting wet with the rain literally being blown ahead of us by no more that a minute or two,Once in Cairns we went around to the Harbour Pier Car Park for a break and look around where some members went for a wander through the Pier Shopping Centre and the adjacent wharfs area,Here we had a break of about 1 hour before heading out for our scheduled lunch break at The Ellis Beach Hotel, This proved to be a bit of a disaster as the group quickly got broken up by traffic lights and for some reason some couldn't read the road signs that said Mossman/Port Douglas, This was exaggerated by one member having a problem with some luggage coming adrift in the middle of the "Traffic Mayhem" and three of us having to back track about 2,5 klms to get back to where the luggage had come adrift and pick it up and resecure it to his bike, with that secure "We Three" then headed off to Ellis Beach after finding someone a bit keen on taking the road to Redlynch/Kuranda instead of Mossman/Port Douglas. When we arrived at Ellis Beach Lloyd had set up for lunch and to say the least there were some unhappy riders mainly due to the group getting fragmented by the intense traffic on the Cairns to Mossman/Port Douglas Highway.
After lunch we headed off up the scenic coast ride to Port Douglas where we refuelled before heading onto Mossman for our next couple of nights accommodation, At this stop Bob's Harley made it's usual long ride announcement of a hugh backfire on start up which resulted in it blowing the Carby off the intake manifold, Bob was prepared for this and quickly had it back together with in about 15 minutes. We arrived at the Mossman Daintree Hotel at about 4pm. "Boy What a Grand Ol Pub!" the hospitality in this establishment was tremendous and a special thanks to Alf & Margret Zeller as they virtually gave a free run of the place and catered for all our need including preparing a night time BBQ which was ably controlled by our resident chef Lloyd D. A couple of guys also took the opportunity to do some washing as there was a Laundromat directly across the road from the hotel and a couple of nice cafes just down the street.

The "Old Tractor" getting the carby refitted.

Having another ale and some nibblies at the end of a days ride.

Day3: Monday May13th: Mossman Free Day & Cape Tribulation Side Ride 150Klms
As today was a lay day we departed Mossman for the Daintree/Cape Tribulation area about 9am, This ride is of short duration but of a reasonably slow nature once you have crossed the Daintree River by barge ($5.00 Return Ticket). There are numerous tourist experiences available for river trips and the group actually did a short detour into the settlement of Daintree just for a look around on the way to the barge crossing. Once across the Daintree River it was onto Cape Tribulation and this was a very pleasant ride through the rainforest apart from the number of fairly severe speed bumps that have been put in the road every few hundred meters in some cases. The ride was definitely worth while but apart from the beach at Cape Tribulation there wasn't much else to see as 90% of the road is within the rainforest,On the return route the group made a planned detour into the Cow Bay Hotel for a look and a couple of drinks and for most this turned into a lunch break, with that break over we then headed back to Mossman with a small group heading over to Port Douglas for a look around and to have a lunch time meal as was previously planned. Lex also took the opportunity to get his new bike serviced by a local service agent during the afternoon break.

Barging it across the Daintree River.

Day4: Tuesday May14th:Mossman to Mt Surprise.327Klms
This day got under way leaving Mossman at approximately 8.30am and today Andy Mann was the nominated lead rider,We travelled out of Mossman and up the Rex Range which was an execellent ride only to be interrupted by a "Lunatic Cafe Racer" that was trying his best to kill himself and anyone else on the range as He sped up and down the twisties on the range section and on one occasion Bob said that he recons this guy was only mm's away from a head on crash with a 4 wheel drive. From the Rex Range we then headed over to Mareeba and onto Atherton when Danny Cash rejoined the ride after stopping with his son in Cairns. After a refuel in Atherton is was off and across the tablelands via Ravenshoe then onto Innot Hot Springs for the scheduled lunch break where once again the "Errant Detour Rider" just whizzes straight past the lunch break stop, Glenn quickly realised what was happening and took off in hot pursuit and got him to come back. After lunch we then headed off on the final leg of today's trip to Mt Surprise via the "Savannah Way"where we once again arrived mid afternoon booking into the Mt Surprise Motel which was conveniently right next door to the Hotel where we stopped on our last venture up this way. This provided very convenient as after we had beer & nibblies from Lloyds Support Trailer it was quite easy to move next door and partake in their drinks and night time meals.

Another afternoon get together at Mt Surprise Motel.

Day5: Wednesday May15th: Mt Surprise ot Karumba.465klms
As this was a reasonably long day the ride got underway at 8.30am with Glenn again being the designated lead rider for the day. This was a pretty good ride apart from a minor incident on the northern end of the new bridge over the Einasleigh River, the roads ( The Savannah Way) were pretty good apart for a couple of section of major road works between Mt Surprise and Georgetown.Once we arrived in Georgetown we visited the local supermarket and did a resupply of Lloyds Support Trailer as this was the last place to have a reasonable amount of supplies available before Karumba. It was then onto Croydon for a refuel and lunch break at the local Anzac Park only to be visited by a local council employees flexing his authority ????? and making it known that He was "Just making sure that we didn't do any wheelies" in the park opposite the Tourist Information Centre ?? Errrrrrrrragh.Once this lunch break was done with we then continued onto Normanton to the Central Motel Hotel which was run by the son of Alf & Margret Zeller of Mossman, Alf notified his son that we would be coming and had previously warned us not to rev the bikes up or fart outside as the "Old Joint" as it just might fall down as it was supposedly riddled with white ants, anyway we had a few beers and did a resupply of refreshments here as the prices were right. We then headed off the last 70Klms to Karumba arriving there mid afternoon. In Karumba we stopped at the Gee Dees Accommodation Units at Karumba Point which coincidentally is across the road from the renowned Sunset Tavern which is the place to go in the late afternoons to watch the sun setting in the gulf. At Gee Dees we had 5 shared self contained units situated around a common area with 3 people to each unit, this stop also gave some members and opportunity to catch up on their laundry requirements as there was washing and drying facilities for $4/wash & $4/ dry in the common area.

The new bridge over the Einasleigh River,Note:The high water markers above the bridge. When it rains in the north it really rains.

Day6:Thursday May16th: Karumba spare day
This was pretty casual day with everyone going off in different direction in the morning to have a look around Karumba ( takes about 7 minutes total),of particular interest were the boat ramps of which I think there was 3 and all of which were to overflowing capacity with anything up to 400 Grey Nomad Tinnies out on the water at any particular time on the days that the tides and fishing is on.This really is Land Cruiser Territory as 99% of the boats are towed down to the boat ramps on tiny unregisters ?? ( most of the time) trailers by either 80 or 100 series Land cruiser Wagons. Most people took the opportunity to take a ride into Karumba township for a look around and some had coffee at the local Hot Bread Shop ( Eh Dale missed another one ) while a few others had a heart starter at the legendary Animal Bar next to the town boat ramp. One of the prime reasons for this trip to Karumba for the second time was to once again sample the local sea food, and once again we were not disappointed as for lunch on this day Bernie slipped down to the local seafood market and got some local prawns,I think He purchased about 7 Kgs of them at a cost of $17/Kg cooked.these were all but devoured at lunch time with a couple of bags being kept for lunch the following day at the Burke & Wills Roadhouse on the way to Julia Creek.
Talking with the locals and some ot the Nomads in Karumba there appeared to be a concern as to what lay ahead for Karumba in the future as the main stay of the town "Century Zinc" loading and storage facilities was rumoured to be closing down by 2015?. Maybe the old town will revert back to its former self as a fishing and prawning town. I guess time will tell and I suggest that it might be quite a while before the BMOA venture back by here again as it's a long way to go for a feed of prawns.

Doing a resupply in Karumba

The Sunset Tavern @ Karumba Point.+ The sunset to die for.

Day7: Friday May17th: Karumba to Burke& Wills Roadhouse to Julia Creek 507Klms
We left Karumba for Julia Creek at 8.30am heading into Normanton for our first leg break and refuelling stop to ensure that all would get to the Burke & Wills Roadhouse which was 200klms away.Glenn Bradley was once again the nominated ride leader as He was fairly familiar with this area. This was our first encounter with those "Pesky Road Trains" and the first one was a beauty with 4 trailers on and would have been carrying at least around 300 head of cattle.during the day we would have more encounters but as the road was good it wasn't a problem.

Those Pesky Road Trains. 300+ head of cattle per road train.

That legendary place in Australia.

After leaving Normanton we headed out for Julia Creek with a leg break at the "Bang Bang Jump Up" renamed "Woop Woop" rest area which is virtually the halfway mark on this sector. This ride was reasonably easy with relatively good road conditions for about 95% of the distance.

Feeding the mob at the Burke & Wills Roadhouse.

After we had refuelled we then had some lunch before setting off on the next 230klms ride down the Wills Development Road to Julia Creek. This was to be a fairly interesting ride as the road was not what you would call a great outback road and was extremely undulating and at times fairly narrow with both wheel tracks sunken down only leaving the centre section to ride on, this caused some handling problems for the 2 Spyda's and the ride group had to slow down and subsequently got strung out over a much longer distance.
Our next stop was at Sedan Dip Country Racecourse and Rodeo Complex which was about 140klms down the road as it was the only place that Glenn could find with any trees of and size that could provide some shade. After a 20minute stop and with 90klms to go the group headed off and it was about a kilometre down the road that we encountered our first tyre problem for the trip with Terry Vandenberg noticing that he was getting a flat rear tyre. Jim Schibrowski and Myself stopped to help and in the process gained some experience in plugging tubeless tyres as the first plug was inserted and they tyre was inflated with Swoosh Tyre Sealant in a pressurised can only to find out that we actually hadn't plugged the right hole as Terry had inserted the plug into an area of the tyre that we thought was the leak but had no leak.We quickly found the real problem and stuck another wick plug into it and with the aid of a couple of gas bottles we are able to get 20psi in the tyre which enabled us to continue with caution to Julia Creek. The main group arrived approximately 45minutes ahead of us and only just in time to refuel as the town had been out of petrol since 6am the previous morning. we have all heard about the "Pub with no beer" but the "Town Without Petrol" was a little different. I later found out the reason was that the supply ship that brings the unleaded fuel to Townsville had broken down and was late into port.

More of those "Pesky Road trains" this one loaded with Unleaded Petrol.

On our arrival we booked into Gannon's Hotel Motel for the night and once again it was a good choice with the ability to be able to secure the bikes, have a few drinks, and a meal and a sleep all in the one location proved acceptable.

Day8:Saturday May18th: Julia Creek to Charters Towers 513Klms
On the road again at about 8.30am with our sights set on Charters Towers,We had a couple of leg stretches along the way and refuelled in Hughenden and had lunch out of the trailer on the banks of the Flinders River in Hughenden.

Lunch break on the Flinders River in Hugenden, Note:the size of the windmill. that's pretty normal for Queensland everything is Fn Big up here..

The weather threatened all day to rain however all we got was luckily a few specks of rain on the visor later in the afternoon. On this leg we encountered numerous "Pesky Road Trains" carting everything from Cattle,Fuel,Copper & Zinc Ore, Gold Processing Acid,Building Supplies,Mining Camp Dongas and Mining Equipment on the move. Most of there road trains were of the 3 or 4 trailer configuration so they generally take a bit of getting around. We arrived in Charters Towers and refuelled at the BP Roadhouse just west of town and then into town and onto our normal place of residence when in Charters Towers the Waverly Hotel, We were met outside by Ken the Hotel Manager who promptly told us to take our bikes around the back and secure them next to the "Bull Ring"?. They have redeveloped the old pub and have erected a bull ring out the back and every three months that have night time Rodeo's in the back yard, the most recent was last weekend and drew a crowd of about 1000 spectators.Once again I think nearly everyone was happy with the accommodation. No sooner had we booked in than the rain that had threatened all day came down and continued for about a hour. Phew! dodged another drenching Lawrie!

The Rodeo Yard for Friday night entertainment

Day9: Sunday May 19th: Charters Towers to Home Sweet Home 462Klms
On the last day a few of the riders thought they would enjoy a hot breakfast so it was back out to the BP Roadhouse for breakfast. We departed Charters Towers again at around 8.30 with myself going lead rider this time. The road from Charters Towers to Woodstock would have been the best road that we had been on for the complete trip. After a short leg break at Woodstock it was off on the shortcut over the jump up down to Giru and then onto Ayr for another leg stretch and refuel.with that out of the way it was onto Bowen for our final leg stretch and refuel before having lunch at the "Driver Reviver"rest area just south of Bowen,With lunch out of the way and this being the last leg to home is was in usual BMOA tradition that the ride split up and different small groups of riders headed home with most arriving in Mackay about 3 to 3.30pm.

The last lunch break outside Bowen before "Home Sweet Home"

A special thanks to Lloyd D who provided the Support Trailer and all the Picnic Facilities in it for our daily lunch breaks after ride drinks & nibblies, Also a special thanks to Jim S who was Tail End Charlie (TEC) for the complete trip and you have to be there to experience what Jim has to put up with being TEC or SWEEP as the ride gets to be like a hugh bungy chord down the back with forever slowing down and maintain TEC position and then continually catching up to the main group. Thanks Lloyd & Jim.

Participants. = 15.

Total ride distance was around the 3245Klm mark.

Looks to be a great trip. Good pics.

I think you need to change that club name to just MOA, the distinct lack of British Motorcycles lets it down somewhat.

Nice write-up.

(Any probs with the TBirds ?)

I am sure that 95% of their work is straight line in and out of delivery & pick up points but I have seen them backing them up and putting them into difficult places. if it was me there would be millions F's and the clutch would be the same.
