Went out for a spin sunday as its nice and my daughter wanted to go for a ride before she goes back to fixing her majasties ships in Portsmouth. THought Id do the decent thing and wash the bike down after the ride and run a quick bit of that spray oil stuff on the engine to keep the fins cleanish. While doing that I polised up the chrome on the engine cover only to find the round chrome disks on the side of the head were all blown. I had two of these replaced a year and a half ago as they the chrome had blown but now not only the replacement ones have blown again but the other side too.
Some chrome even flaked off much to my horror. What is it with Triumph and chrome ? No wonder they dont bother with chrome wheels any more . Im going to write a letter to Hinkley , again, letting them know how rubbish their chrome is and see what they say . Probably tough its out of warentee go buy a Harley where they actually bother to chrome things properly.
Really pissed off. Four years old kept in a bike shed and this keeps happening . Not only that I noticed the mirrors are starting to show evidance of little sharp raised areas so they are going too.
Bloody bollox it is.

A couple of us on this site have used them and their plating is fantastic. Perhaps you can find their equivalent in the UK. Send the various bit to them over the winter and reassemble in the spring.

I agree Harley has great chrome and paint but you have to put up with an antiquated engine and chassis to get the good chrome.

I love my Tbird but I would love it more if the front forks hadnt corroded (replaced) one of my new mirrors damp got behind the glass when it rained (replaced) One of the heat shield's weld broke (awaiting the replacement) . Wheels terrible and dull. Two engine chrome bits replaced because chrome blown (replaced) . Now all four blown(we shall see) . Thats not to mention a paint scuff I noticed under the laquer that the dealer said Tirumph wouldnt do anythimg about.
I guess if I spent an hour after riding it every time, polising and protecting the chrome it might live longer but I like to ride and thought a rub down every couple rides and whipe down after it got caught inthe rain would sort it out . Maybe Im just unlucky with the chrome stuff. All I know is its really anoying but by far from game changing .

I think if you love the Tbird you gonna have to refurb bits and slowly make it the bike you want. I'm just planning to do bits when they fall below a standard I'm happy with. I think the wheels will be first! My caps have blown the chrome too like yours. I think they come off with the rocker cover. I'm no expert but I think its poor quality aluminium anodising under the chrome.

You also have to be willing to pay for HD Chrome and finish. Triumph will never get close to HD's finish quality unless they start charging HD prices for their bikes.

I don't know about costs , .but ... the reason that Triumph chrome wheels are shit is that they chromed an alloy metal that was not an appropriate material for the chroming process. I don't what metal is under the other Triumph parts or what metal Harley has under it's chrome.

The dealer said that they can fit a replacement new chrome cam top thingy for around the ??300 all in.
My bike just has a bit of minor pitting where the discs are on the top - and its done 26,000 miles.
I wonder if the cleaning or the general treatment of that area by the previous owners has been the issue with my kids bike.....
