| | Posted : 25 Jan 2013 - 05:39 Post title : Ventura Rack and Panniers | | | Recently bought a Storm and am going through the process of what panniers to put on it.
Have read some other posts on the site regarding options and the pros & cons of each one.
Am leaning towards the K-Drive bags as I have used them on other bikes previously and seem easy to install and remove.
Has anyone tried putting a Ventura Rack on a TBird yet?
The ideal set up would saddlebags for around town and a Ventura Rack for the long distance trips. Apparently both systems use the same mounting points and cannot be used in conjunction with each other. Unless some modifications are made and hence, the warranty is voided.
Does anyone have some ideas?

I had the K Drive bags on my Kawasaki and think they were great. I thought I heard that the company went broke !! I might be wrong though. Magpie

I had heard the same as Rob (Magpie), that the K-Drive Panniers company had gone bust.
Luckily I still had a set of K-Drive panniers from my Speedmaster, and with a small modification they were fitted to my Silver Thunderbird. They sure work fine for me.
As to a Ventura Rack system, I find the Sausage Bag on the Long Haul Sissy Bar is more than adequate.
Welcome to the Sunshine & Rain.
Cheers Alex

I assume that you seen this thread;
Link I use 'bog standard' Triumph bags and combinations of Iron Rider or Kuryakan ??, or ventura bags, slid over the top of the standard Triumph sissy bar.
Each to their own.
Hope you're coming to Walcha in March!!

The Kdrive company has been taken over but it appears their products are still being made under a different name.
Here is the link for the Thunderbird bags
Link The local bike shop here in Sunny QLD (rainy day) put me onto them.
Have been considering the Ventura rack as I am trying to have something to put my bag onto for large trips and am not too fussed about having a sissy bar on the Storm. The Ventura rack can become a grab bar when not being used as a rack.
As we know the Storm rear seat is very narrow and I'm worried about tying my bag onto it and having it rub the paint on the fender.
A touring seat is wider so I believe and protects the seat/fender better but they are fairly costly for the geniune article.
And finally Jimbo, since I'm a newbie - whats happening in March at Walcha??

I use the 'toaster rack' on the back of mine and as I mentioned I use either an Iron Rider bag(s), Kuryakyn 'Grand Bag" or sometimes even an old Ventura bag, strapped down to the rack.
When you take the bag off you are just left with a flashy chrome rack which taked the place of the rear seat. If you have/want to carry 'he who must be obeyed' on the back, you're right the standard pillion seat is not too good. Much better to get the Touring seat; but if you do that you'll need to get the Touring riders seat also. The two 'do' fit together, but they don't look right! You'd be much better to change out both seats, or get the one-piece Touring seat if you want to incorporate the riders backrest (at extra cost!!).
As to Walcha -- read the Events and Rides section of the Forum - look for the "2013 Aussie Flocking" thread. To get a bit of history, if you've got plenty of time, read about last years Flocking at Tumbarumba and the Far Cairn Fecken Flocking of Oz at Tottenham to get a idea of what goes on.
In short, we (Australia) hold the World Record for the most number of Triumph Thunderbirds, assembled in one place for the purpose of having a good time!!
Last year at Tumbarumba we had 35 Thunderbirds assembled outside the Tumbarumba District Hospital and we raised $1100 for the Hospital, with little or no organisation, absolutely minimal support from Triumph Australia and I believe that everyone had a great time.
This year is is being hosted by Walcha, so, as Walcha is closer to you, than it is to me, you should be going.
Cheers
