Have managed a run to 8 miles to empty, total distance 205 miles for that trip.

No tellin' how many gal were in there at the 50-mi left indicator. I'm getting 35.7 mpg, but only have 771 miles on it.

| Posted : 22 Mar 2010 - 09:57 Post title : Re: Gas tank on empty (Re: BaltoThunder) | | Filled up twice the last couple of days. My findings were:
1st Tank Km To Empty = 10km (6 miles) Amount filled = 18.71 ltr (4.94 US Gal / 4.12 UK Gal) Trip Total = Tacho was reset after battery was taken out from BB-Kit installation! Consumption =
2nd Tank Fill Km To Empty = 13km (8 miles) Amount filled = 18.52 ltr (4.89 US Gal / 4.07 UK Gal) Trip Total = 328.1 km (202.5 miles) Consumption = 5.64 ltr/100 km (41.67 US mpg / 50.05 UK mpg)
These are WITH the BB-Kit installed and running her in. -----------------------
My previous tank just before I had the BB-Kit installed was:
Tank Before BB-Kit Km To Empty = Can't remember.... Amount filled = 15.52 ltr (4.10 US Gal / 3.41 UK Gal) Trip Total = 230.1 km (142.03 miles) Consumption = 6.74 ltr/100 km (34.89 US mpg / 41.91 UK mpg)
So basically/theoretically when I have been filling up with approximately 18 Liters of fuel, there is still around 4 Liters in the tank! That would - again theoretically - be around another 70 km (44 miles) till she was DRY!

Wow! You have a heavy hand! Cruising fast (85 mph) and accelerating "briskly" I can still get over 200 miles from a tank. When my low fuel light comes on I have around a gallon of fuel left and if I run the "miles left" indicator down to around 5 or 10 I still have more than a 1/2 gallon left. The bike has just about 6,000 miles on it.
I didn't pay much attention to this when the bike was new, but it seems to have improved as I put miles on.

I get pretty poor mileage personally. I get around 36 mpg. I don't think it's a weight issue as I'm not too far off what several folks are sporting. I can only assume that it's do to my less than aerodynamic size. Well, that and I have horrible wrist control.
I went on a group ride on Sunday and was about to come out of my skin, especially when we hit one of my favorite roads... I'll have to check mileage on next fill up since that nearly the whole tank was group ride miles..... it might be better.

You must have a newer model with the 5.1 gal. tank. I don't know what my T-bird will get. I just got it last Friday and still just have 50 miles on it because it snowed this past weekend but I'm thinking 200-240 plus.

I'm thinking these guages are messed up though. It said I had about 50 miles to go before empty. But if that tank holds 5.8, I still had another 2.8 gllaons in the and another 100 miles or so before empty. I guess I will go by the tripmeter and not the gas gauge

They are not messed up - they are engineered like the ones in cars. The low fuel light comes on in my car when I have about 4 gallons left. When the miles-to-zero reads zero, I still have a lot of gas left. It's just part of our "we'll make sure you can't hurt yourself" society. In this cause its: "We'll make sure you don't run out of gas..."

A few years ago I watched show where they looked at various cars and how far you could go after empty. The American cars would go an average of around 40 miles after they were 'empty'. This included cars that had computers with DTE readouts. The results were pretty similar across all cars minivans and trucks from American manufacturers. The German cars they tested died right at empty. Something tells me that trying to make a German build an purposely inaccurate gauge is not exactly going to be met with open arms.
Personally I'd like the gauge to be a bit more accurate. Since we have the DTE I don't find any need for the fibbing. Without that feature however I do like to be lied to a bit, or have a reserve.

BTW - the car I was referencing is a 2007 Audi A4. I could half way around the country when it reads empty. My prior ride - a VW, was similar. Perhaps the Germans have caved on this issue.

By the way Engage, I'm good to go for Saturday. Current forecast here for Saturday is Sunny with a high of 84. Can't ask for much more.

Thatch - my son's wife went to the doctor yesterday, which put an end to our North Carolina plans. She is six weeks premature and going into labor. There is a likely chance that she will go into the hospital next Monday. If we did the trip we would only have one day to stay (Saturday) and would have to do 12-14 hours on Sunday to get home. Given this, we decided to cancel.
I looked forward to meeting you and my daughter is going to be bummed (she called me yesterday with the forecast), but there just isn't another choice.
There's a good chance I'll do the trip in May and I'll be in touch if that's the case.
Thatch - Thanks for making the time and sorry for the last minute cancellation. My son and I went back and forth on this last night, but it just doesn't make sense given the circumstances.

I had over 320km on the tank and was just about to fill up when the Bird started to stall on me!!! It only 'died off' when I shut the throttle off coming to roundabouts. If I kept the throttle on a bit it would be OK - but to let it drop down to idle was a NO GO!
After filling her up there were NO PROBLEMS. So I think its a vacume - pressure thing. Well I'm slowly learning the characters of my Bird ;-) Wont let her get down that low again.

I just got back from a short trip and let the miles-to-empty go down to 10. At that point, the bird took 4.66 gallons of gas so I still had about 1.1 gallons left.

Actually no! I had only ridden about another 5 miles in the Zero Zone... Anyways - I filled up again today with 11 km to Zero. Everything was cool - no hiccups.

Just for the records - I looked into my logbook (yes - I'm one of those sad men with a logbook - actually it's a good thing, as I see what changes occure after services and such) and I saw that with the aforementioned fillup I put 19.79 Litres (5.23 gal (US)) into the tank. The tanks holds 21.7 Liters (5.73 gal (US)) as we know - so there was around 2 Liters (0.53 gal (US)) remaining....
Oops - that's not much really!
