| Posted : 05 Aug 2012 - 23:59 Post title : Low RPM "rattling" sound Identified!!! | | Okay, so a about 2000 miles ago, I got the new rear tire put on by the dealer. After about 500miles, I started picking up a "rattle" at low RPM's, under load. Could never find the source, even after checking every bolt/nut torque on the bike.
Yesterday, just about to take off for a 150 mile jaunt with my gal, and I hear it...clear as day. It's the left heat shield (stock pipes). Shut off the bike, give a mile "wiggle", and....SNAP!!!! shield busts off in my hand!!! All 4 (if I recall right), welds were toast, and busted off.
The ONLY folks that have touched this thing are the dealership. Now I gotta make a call, and see what's what, and if they'll take care of it. I've had it since Jun'11, and over 9000miles. Me thinks I'm gonna be up the proverbial creek without a paddle.
At least the noise is sorted

More like a chugging sound, almost a knocking. A sound i would never in a million years would be cause by that shield. But it did have one broken weld and when i stuffed a piece of rubber under it the sound disappeared. Got it welded and it has been quiet as a mouse since. That experience and now your post make me wonder how many reported noises are due to this !

i have a broken weld on the smallish heat shield, the one abutting the cylinder head around the exaust pipe. mine has two welds though not 4.,(one each side). i also have a tappet type sounding rattle at low revs. i found mine was adrift when i was cleaning the bike. if you lift it slightly and let go it it does have a high ping sound.
never really equated the two but now you mention it, it makes a whole lot of sense.

@Davetac - the clamps are still there. But the welds that held the clamps to the shield are no more! This is why I didn't find the culprit sooner. The torque on the clamp bolt/nut was fine...the weld, not so much

But would still need the heat shield. Was jammed up at work today, so will be making a call to the dealership tomorrow. Still got almost a year left on warranty, and they were the only ones that have touched the bike, so should be okay.

I just looked those chrome covers up on Bike Bandit. 179 bucks[EACH SIDE] for what,a chrome cover???Are they nuts??? Talk about a rip off!! There's gotta be away to repair em.However, since the bike is still under warantee, and since the stealer was the last one to work on it,then it's their problem. And,unless I miss my guess, they didn't really look at em when they attempted to take em off, assuming that they just pulled off, hence the reason one is now broken. Make sense guys??? Dave!!!

(Re: bnz433) | | So the dealer put in the warranty request to replace my left side heat shield (had the busted weld) on 5Aug. Guess what???? Still no status. Dealer doesn't know when it'll be here, just that they "put the warranty request in, and they'll call me when it gets here". WTF!! 5 weeks later and nothing. And he said if he simply ordered the part (as in the case where I was paying for it) he'd be able to track the status. Not the case for warranty parts, though??????
Argghhhh!!!!! Can get one for $180 on E-bay, but they won't reimburse if I do.

| Posted : 14 Sep 2012 - 20:19 Post title : Re: Low RPM "rattling" sound Identified!!! (Re: bnz433) | | Don't feel bad Jamie. FOUR months ago,I put in a warantee claim for two front rotors, front caliper rebuild kits for both calipers, and a new set of front pads, because both front rotors had warped. [sticking pistons in the calipers were the culprits] The right rotor wasn't too bad,but the left one was another story as it was a lot worse.Anyways,I finally got the caliper rebuild kits and that job is done. However,I have only received one rotor to date, the right one.But no left rotor[which is the one I really need] and the pads, still have not shown up to date.So I have been breathin down the dealers neck pretty good over the last few weeks and he allegdedly, got in touch with Triumph about this problem and as of yesterday,he called to tell me that the left rotor and pads are on their way. They're probably comin via boat from the moon.lol Case in point,if these parts were somethin that was detrimental to the operation of the machine, the bike would be sittin in the corner collectin dust cause I wouldn't be able to ride it.So what good is it.Follow me?? And I agree, had I paid for em,they would probably have been here four months ago.But because it was a warantee issue,Triumph, and or the stealer, probably didn't care.I don't know. But I'm like a dog with a Frizby and don't let go.So my point is, hang in there buddy and stay tight on their ass until you get your parts.Dave!!!
