I bought a few cans of compressed air at staples & now use it to blow off pebbles/sand dirt accumulated near the oil dipstick etc & the nooks & crannies on the other side. So if you want to check your oil just blow it off with a quick squirt (here comes the oral jokes ) It works great!

And boy does the dipstick like a good blowing off before it checks the oil...

I find that 100mph does a pretty good job of keeping crap off the engine.
