| | Posted : 03 May 2011 - 18:47 Post title : Summer storage | | | Many of you Bird owners are just getting your bike out for the season whilst I will be putting mine away for six months at the end of the week. I live in Palm Desert CA in the winter and Vancouver BC in the summer so my riding season is coming to a close.
Last year I was able to manoeuvre my America into the house and store it in the dining room (this all happened after my wife left to go back home ) but the Bird is a bit big and heavy for me to attempt this so I will be leaving it in an uninsulated garage where I suspect the temperatures will get very warm indeed. Summer in the desert here is very hot withs most days over 100 degrees Fahrenheit
I intend to do all the steps recommended in the "Preparing your bike for winter" thread including oil change and fogging the engine. I will put the battery on a tender inside the house which is "cooled" to 90 degrees I will also probably put the seat in the house as well.
Are there any other suggestions or recommendations for summer storage

Sit it on blocks.

I am not keen on a 1400 mile ride followed by the hassle and cost of having to import the bike into Canada (licence insurance etc)
I rent a bike a few times during the summer and have to disagree about Vancouver being a great place to ride a bike. Its a slow moving parking lot most of the time, particularly in the summer. From my home on the Westside its a least and hour of traffic riding to get to the Whistler/Duffy Rd highway and the rest of the riding is not all that great in my opinion.
Maybe I am spoiled down here in the desert where we have wonderful mountain roads accessible about 5 minutes from my home.

Palm Springs SHELL 87 89 91 Shell 2796 North Palm Canyon Drive N33.80137 W116.51484 map details
I would highly suggest putting 100% pure gas in the bike prior to layup-also use Marine Stabil in the fuel as a back up. Don't forget to tape over the exhausts to keep lizards and stuff from crawling up there.
I was going to ride my Thunderbird from Florida to Michigan but ran out of time so just will use my Shadow I keep up there.
Good luck,

I am sad to be putting the Bird away for the summer but I know I will be back in the fall ready to ride and appreciate her after a couple of days of rented HD's during the summer
