As my other post mentioned I'm getting my bike worked on at the local Suzuki shop and they (obviously) don't carry the Triumph version of Castrol oil. What they do have is Motul. Anyone have any thoughts on using Motul? I have no experience with it. It is a semi synthetic oil but other than that and the fact that I recognize the name I know nothing about it.

Any thoughts about running Motul in your bird?

If I'm not mistaken - that's the oil I have in mine since 11'000 km.
I have no problem with it - smells the same - looks the same - tastes the same, and even leaks the same!!!

Other than that I don't really have much to say that has weight to it! Sorry.

Thatch... you are definitely in the mood to start controversy today, huh?

I've heard nothing but great things about Motul oil. My buddy Dave at 303Cycles sells it like hotcakes... the sportbike guys LOVE the stuff.

Of course, you're gonna hear lots of opinions about semi-synth vs. full synth. but really, if the oil is JASO-MA rated (or the equivalent) and is even close to Triumph's recommended viscosity, you'll be just fine. The school of thought I use is if you simply cut the manufacturer's change interval in half (I'm changing mine every 3000 miles), you can run just about any oil trouble-free... again, as long as it's JASO-MA rated.

Mmmmm, I wonder if they make a JASO-MA olive oil?

I agree. AT 3,000 mile intervals I would not worry about a semi-synthetic. I'm not sure its worth worrying about at 6,000...

I agree, the 7100 was the only oil my Triumph dealer would use when servicing the Rocket and I've been using the 5100 in my other bikes for years.

Good stuff.

Don't beleive the hype ! - all synthetic oils are made from Group 3 base oils, additives and in some cases for very high specs PAO's. Only a handful of companies actually make Group 3 oils - for instance Castrol and Motul don't. In essence, most are using the same base material to make the oils and there are only 4 major additive companies worldwide now, 3 of which are owned by oil companies.

It always amuses me when I see die hard loyalty to a particular oil because its much better than X or Y because it is quite likely to be made from exactly the same raw material and people get taken in by the marketing hype. Essentially, just make sure it meets the spec and you'll be fine

If you can keep your head when all around are losing theirs, then you haven't grasped the gravity of the situation !!!.

If oils are like rooffig tars they are made in 5,000 gallon churns the run through a canning line that puts a dozen different lables on the same product. You pay the price for the brand name not a better product.

Yes 20/50 is a viscosity number. Some oils, like this one are multi viscosity hence the 2 numbers. According to mostly temperature (I believe) the oil can go anywhere from 20 weight to 50 weight. The "Specs" are the double letters on the can and you should use what's recommended by Triumph in this case. They like synthetic and prefer Mobil One Racing 4T. I'm sure someone else here can get more technical if you want. I'm happy with that information personally since I don't plan on refining my own.

A multi viscosity oils' double numbers mean, when the oil is cold, the viscosity is at the lower number, hence when it's hot,the viscosity is at the upper number as Mike explained with his example of 20/50 weight oil.Dave!!!
