Are you sure it's not the normal clicking/knocking sound that many/most engines make while cooling down?

All I can say is dealer service spins stories for a living. 2 small screwdrivers make more of a tapping sound, don't they?
Knocking would be like 2 hammers, sorta.

Frequency and duration?
Happens at all shut-offs?

My first gut feel is that you are hearing the cam chain against the plastic runners as it slows. Maybe mad_angler1 has some input.

But, I'm very suspect of any of these casual guessers linking a 4500 mile noise to a 400 mile noise on a different model.
And then the throw away line..."Oh yeah, it's getting to be a common problem."

SHEESH!@@$ will wonders never cease? Yer being played, Playa.

Without actually hearing the noise, but from your description,an educated guess would be the decompression mechanism fly weights on the ends of the exhaust cam shaft as they have a tendency to settle when the motor is shut down.I've been hearing that noise since day one and I now have over 14,000 miles on my bird. But that's not to say that somethin else isn't wrong. So let the dealer check it out. That way if it is somethin else, they have a record of it.Dave!!!
