Gents,
I know that when I had the VN900 the recommended tyre pressure was a lot different than the one that the majority of riders used to use.
What are your thoughts which is the most suitable pressure to give optimum wear and handling .

Mate I'm still playing around with one up,38 & 40, next will be 40 & 42, but at 3000k's too early to tell on wear, I'm more interested in handling at this stage.

that's what I run and I get reasonable wear - 10 to 11K, but get significant cupping.

well i was running 39 on the back tyre, 2 up, about 155kg

and im starting to get raised lipping all the way to the outer edge on the rear tyre tread. heard it was due to rebound. could b the truth on the poor roads, maybe need better shocks. doesnt look like cupping though

Was running 40/42 and now am trying 39/41 for awhile. I like the ride better but have no idea about how it will affect wear. I'm at 6000mi right now and the front looks like it might just make 10k but theres no way the rear is gonna make it that far. I may try 40/40 next. I only ride solo and only additions currently are saddlebags and the big windshield. Good luck let us know when you find the perfect balance

I'm 230, have the rear suspension notched up one and likely don't ride any near as hard as you. The bags are only on when traveling and the windscreen comes off when it hits 75.

I THOUGHT 36/38 in the owner's book seemed oddly low! I tried 38/40 on the weekend loaded up; should probably go to 40/42 I guess. Only 6000 km so far, so can't see any bad effects on the tyres from low pressure yet.

Using the 40,front and 42, rear, are either of your tires squaring off in the middle of the tread??? Thanks! Dave!!!

Can I ask a stupid question? Why are you guys not using the factory 36/38?
From this thread it is not obvious if there are any issues with this setting.

Where you guys finding the stock settings resulted in faster wear?

Yes toxic, the factory tire pressure results in premature wear. Like others I run mine at 40 front and 42 rear. My front has 12,000 miles on the original and the back well, uh, ummm, yeah the back, it got replaced at 8,500 miles due to premature wear from its owner... Yeah Well Fun Costs Money (YWFCM)... People have tried different tires to see if they can get more life than the Metz gives. I have Shinko Advance on the back now and it wont get much past 4,500 miles. And, I have not abused it. Next I will try the Dunlop Roadsmart and see what happens.

I went up to 40/42 last weekend and 2 on the rear shocks(87 kilos), even though most of the ride was highway, it did feel much better(easier to flick) through a series of roundabouts and smoother on the highway.Hopefully get a longer ride on back roads this weekend.

Leethal,
I am about 85 kg and have the shocks on 2 . I have pumped it up to the 40 - 42 . I am one my way to Bathurst tomorrrow, it will take about 6 hours to get there. I will let you know how it goes. The ride that is......not the drinking !

No worries mate, thanks, keen to hear the report. I actually set it up that way to take a mate(65-70 kilos) to a dawn service and it seemed to do the job quite well, one or two up. It was my first pillion ride with the bird and I was very impressed as to how the bike handled it. Rock steady!!

Wish I could have made the trip, but I would need to have taken at least two extra days off work to make it. Long ride from here solo.

I run the recommended pressures found in the book and on the bike label. I have 8300 miles on my 2010 1600 and the OEM tires look great. I'll easily get 12-15k out of the rear, maybe more out of the front.

FTR, I'm 150 lbs (soaking wet).
