| | Posted : 14 Apr 2011 - 21:23 Post title : New Storm owner | | | Hi
Test rode a 1600 T/bird last year and it did not have what I wanted so I stuck with my GSA.
When I test rode the Storm it mostly looked how I wanted it to be and the 1700 punch made it feel a lot better. Deal done right away and I now have my Jet Black/Purple Storm with the short Triumph performance exhausts and performance filter. Sounds really great and has a fine throttle response. Not too loud but has 1960's sound levels, which is fine. (Purple appears in the Black when viewed in bright sunlight)
Too many speed camera's and reduced speed limits in UK made me want a bike that make more noise and slows me down a bit. Noise and feel do not cost as much to my wallet or Drivers license.
The T/Bird Storm has a good riding position for me and handles pretty good but I had to up the OEM rear springs preload from its factory setting of 1 to 3 in order to reduce the pegs scraping and increase the steering sharpness. This has helped a bit but I know when the suspension is poor enough to upgrade.
The suspension copes well enough on smooth surfaces and gentle (slow movement) bumps but when the bike hits sharper more sudden (high speed movement) bumps it is hopeless. I have already ordered a complete Wilbers Shock and Fork upgrade which will cost but is worth it for me. I know the difference a good quality suspension upgrade can make, having done it several times before on bikes.
It is perhaps more vital on a bike where your feet are set forward and therefore makes it more difficult to absorb bumps through your legs with bent knees. I find bumps on this bike go straight though my spine as my legs are removed from the action.
I have fitted the rear pillion backrest (sissy bar) and rack for weekends away with the wife. This weighs a ton and its on the garage floor until its needed. The heated grips are also on order.
I ordered the Rider Longhaul seat (and Pillion) having sat on one in the showroom. Simply massive upgrade in comfort and quality over the OEM seats based on my showroom experience. I guess the 'Bean counters' rule in the provision of suspension and seats but the Longhaul seats are a reasonable priced quality upgrade IMO. Still waiting for the Riders seat.
Anyway, hello from Windsor UK.
Cheers

good read and definitly intune with your bike already.
what made you go with wilbers as a pose to other suspension options? our roads are poor and bottoming is easily done on all settings esp with pillion
check out the dent thread on here if your up for a meet.

Had a banquet at your castle a couple of weeks ago - nice spread you got there.
Once you have had time to adjust to the Thunderbird/Storm but once you have it will blow your mind! 17,000 miles on mine and just gets better.
Welcome to the forum - be interested in your suspension upgrade.

I chose Wilbers because they are a quality brand and have got good reviews on other bikes.
They also supply units for the Thunderbird and these are now in their catologue so they have been tried and tested on the bike.
Some other solutions seem to be adaptions of existing units by the fitter and they are not listed by the manufacturer.
I will post a short review when fitted.

Congratulation, good choice. Why not flat black?
good summary of your experience. Suspension is also a topic for me. Did ride 1000km in the mean time.
Longhaul is definitively a good choice and helps a bit absorbing bumbs... Do you use the stock pillon with the longhaul?
Have fun

Gorgeous, BUT there were scratches on the tank where a zipper or belt may have hit when someone hopped on. It looks VERY easy to scratch and with no clear coat and being flat, good luck with the scratch repair!

I think if someone opts for matte black, they've gotta sort of have the, "It's a Rat Bike" attitude and figure scratches are part of the character of the bike. I've had my bike since August 31st of 2010 and I'm already getting a bit sick of worrying about how clean it is, about how many scratches and swirls are in the tank and side covers, and about how clean my wheels are. I mean... I bought it to ride, not spend all my free time cleaning the bitch!

I'm thinking about going Wilbers as well, the performance of the rear shocks on bumpy, uneven roads is really very disappointing!
What have you chosen from Wilbers?
or the
I'm leaning more towards the second one...

I also ordered the fork springs and oil.
Lets wait and see, mine will be another 2 weeks on order from last week.
