| | Posted : 10 Apr 2011 - 21:22 Post title : caliper warning | | | fyi i recieved a letter from hinckley saturday morning ( other tbird owners have too) it explained that salt will impair the performance of your brakes and if you have ran your bike through the winter or ridden it on roads even after you have thought the salt has gone you need to check your brakes, get your dealer to maintain them or maintain them yourself the letter included a dummys guide on stripping and cleaning the caliper.
methinks there has been some seizing

| | Posted : 11 Apr 2011 - 05:57 Post title : Re: caliper warning (Re: mat1600) | | | If ya run a machine during the winter months and on sand and salt covered roads,as long as you rinse the machine off thoroughly,as well as the calipers and pad areas,which should be done everytime you wash the machine,winter or summer,you shouldn't really have any problems.I've been driving motorcycles thru the winter months,thru ice and snow storms and then right after the storms when they sand and salt the roads,from 1978 until I retired in 2002,and just thoroughly rinsed the machine and brake areas when I get home and never had any brake problems.Check em anyways,but if you follow that procedure,you shouldn't have any problems. i agree, and part of the letter tells us to do that but only with cold water. however since they have been adding molasses to the mix the adhesive qualities of the salt has increased. whether this is a factor i dont know but i do know for years a mate of mine ran his bm every winter, rinse no probs then the winter they started to add molasses his fron fork lowers started to be eaten away, bare alloy). after 3 years they look like the surface of the moon, very bad casting or an aero bar. in addition they also talk of being aware that even if the roads appear saltless there is probably salt there which could be attributed to a stickier mix.
ps i removed the pulley cover and your advice (from a different thread) was well warranted. there were quite substansial sized grit housed ominoulsy there. good call Dave
