| | Posted : 09 Apr 2011 - 08:19 Post title : Handlebar position | | | After now doing 400 miles on new Thunderbird, I feel the riding position would be more comfortable if I was leaning back maybe one to two inches.
Have the long haul seat, and if I lean back a little I can feel the step in the seat supporting the base of my back that little better.
As it is now, I can feel the weight on the base of the spine and it is causing a slight ache.
Are there bars that pull back a little, or would adding higher risers be better solution.
I then guess I would need longer clutch cable and brake pipe?
Thanks
Lionel

Have a look. I also added Deuce risers.
I needed the longer brake line when I added the risers, but I just had to re-route the cables.

Its as if I need another inch of room on the rear area of the seat, I tried to get different bars the ones on the storm but not available. I might have to get the touring backrest to keep me straight.

You might want to consider some custom foam work on your seat... maybe chopping a good portion of the back away and reshaping to get you a bit back more in the saddle. Thatch did that when he recovered his. I had the opposite problem and had some foam added when I re-covered my saddle. A little foam reshaping can have pretty dramatic results in comfort.

I wish i was like a lot of you guys and comprtent to do the work myself , but i'm not i would'nt hve a clue , and leave any and all work on my vechiles to people who know what there doing , its a lot cheaper and safer in the long run .
But it does put me at a disadvantage in that i cannot experiment without big costs involved . and one experiment i'm very keen to see , that would resolve that problem is
MINI APES .
Only thing is , something my mate said to me sort of made sence , he said you have a nice bike . you want louder ppes and mini apes , why did you get rid of youe street bob , to buy a T bird only to turn it into a street bob
Sort of made sence , but i don't care , i would still love to see a t bird with mini apes. and the exhaust , well thats gonna be a hard one . I cannot realy see any pipes being more suited to the Tbird than the shortie pipes , they just make the bike look sooo coool
, BUT there not loud enough.

The Deuce risers do not have the rubber mounts that the OEM ones do and I do notice a bit more vibration but nothing serious at all

I think their bars are slightly wider, higher and swept back a little more.
The position of those bars seemed to suit me better.
I could get the America through the garden arch to the shed easier than the Thunderbird. The Bird seems a little wider to get through, unless the it's the extra weight that make it a bit harder to wiggle through.

That also crossed my mind at the time, but thought I would try the bike as it came.
I mentioned in another post that a new Thunderbird tourer was spotted and photographed in this weeks Motorcycle News, The handle bars on that do look higher and maybe wider.
This news in only in the printed weekly, nothing appeared on their website yet.
