My saddlebag mounts are just as stiff as if they were bolt-bolt-bolted in place. The T-bird mounts are hinged. This is to allow a bit of sway and avoid oscillation resonances. But the way mine are assembled, there is no motion, and only the slightest bit of stiff damping.

Have a look for yourself:

(Never mind the salt. It's on my list. One of the risks of the season.)

It looks just like the installation instructions:

And so, I'm baffled. This assembly allows zero sway, except under impact forces.

My question to the Learned Birders is, "Is this it? Is this the way it's supposed to be? Is this the way YOURS is assembled?"

OK, I know that was three questions.

Cheers, and TIA.

Hi Telebass, I'm not sure what mounting system you are referring to here and I also don't know what bags you are trying to attach so I'm also not sure if my response will help but here goes - have you looked at the Easy Brackets? Many people have used these with quite a number of different bags. I have used them to mount my Hardstreet Slims (bought the lot through Fast Eddy) and they are both easy (as the name suggests) to mount and do a great job of allowing me to easily (that word again) take the bags off when I want to. Not sure I have helped but hope I have.

Cheers, Max

Oops. Guess I wasn't clear about it - these are the stock bags and mounts.

I've looked at the EZbrax etc. etc. but for what one pays for these stock bags one would expect a finely tuned system, wouldn't one. One is disappointed, however. And one is not inclined to spend a penny on another system until the first set is dam well used up and useless. Or so one says...

Hi telebass if you have any trouble with your bags touching your exhausts , which I did. The cure I have found is to make the top mounts the ones that pivot tight, and add another washer to the inside of the bottom mount huge improvement system works well.

I find the system works well.

The puzzle - why the pivots above if you disallow the pivoting with the bolt assembly below.

?

I mean Whiskey Tango.

But I'm not having any problem with them and they're not hitting my pipes, so i really can't complain.

But I do. It's a hobby.

I have the same mounts on my SE. Never could understand why they call them pivot mounts. Mine don't move at all. I checked the installation
and mine are mounted the same as yours. So, what's the purpose of the pivot mount if they don't move? I don't get it???

The mounts do work & they do flex, trust me. I had a set of rubbers collapse on me while going through western Queensland & the saddlebags wore the chrome off the top of my pipes. Turns out the original rubber compound was too soft, problem was rectified September 2010 with a harder compound rubber. triumph came to the party & replaced everything... they must really love me being a guinea pig for new shit. I argued they should have made urethane bushes...
Looks like you have the new bushes

I'm new to this type of thing. Writing on the net and such things. T-bird saddle bags on my SE when riding through Europe this year touched the top of the exhausts and rubbed the chrome off. On my America I put click bags on which are easy to take on and off. Pack in the hotel room then just click on. The T-bird bags were getting packed on the bike with the wife more or less jumping on them to pack all her gear. I was getting quite distressed. Would shorter pipes alleviate the problem? Pay out for expensive click bags or don't take the wife?:

Short pipes sound nice. Do bags still touch?

Check the mounting rubbers on the bracket as per the first post. see if they have collapsed. If they have, it could be a warranty item depending on how old the unit is. It's only 4 x 8mm(headed) bolts to take the panniers off to check. The top mount bushes(on the bolt which runs parallel to the bike) could sometimes flog out too.
I had everything replaced under warranty... bushes, bags & pipes. Take lots of photos.
Hope this helps

Hi Telebass. I think the purpose was for a combination of minor flex & vibration minimisation(thus causing minimal stresses on the fibreglass back of bags to the mounting bracket). The bike can fall over on the bags without causing any real damage. There is some flex, but i think the unit would have been better with urethane bushes as opposed to rubber

I'm not sure why the Triumph Thunderbird panniers are touching the exhaust...mine have plenty of clearance.

Took these today after I crossed the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, MS (first one) and at Hattiesburg, MS for the second one.

If the bags are touching the exhaust, then either they're not adjusted right or ya need to shift the load in the bag.I also had that problem. But after some experimentation,I cracked the code and now my bags are approximateky an inch off the mufflers on both sides, and they hang square, not crooked like others that I've seen. But I had to keep playin with em until I got it right. I guess I'm in that same camp. I now have EasyBrackets, but I started with the Triumph brackets and there is no way I could even force the bags to touch the exhaust.

Hi molinoman,

I had a ride into inland Queensland. The main highway was crap & bouncy. 9 hours of this and the return trip flogged out the bushes & made the bags sag & start rubbing on the top of the pipes. the new bushes are better.
