Metzelers have good grip, but the Avons are every bit as good in the rain, if not better. I am not pleased with the mileage it takes to wear out the Metzelers and seek a better mousetrap this retiring, or, if you please, retyring. I know the Dunlops are alternative tires for the Thunderbird 1600/1700, but the spec on these Avons suggest they might be a reasonable fitment fort my Triumph Thunderbird SE A1.

Comments welcomed. This seemed to be the only alternative where you ended up with two tires from the same tire series, and not a hod podge of different tires front and back.

Handling and ride seem better than the Metz and with 7,000 miles now on the Avons the rear appears to only be about half way through it's tread life. No downside at all that I can see, and the mileage certainly leaves Metzler out of the running for me.
I got mine at Jake Wilson also. Best price I could find and very quick, free delivery. I highly recommend them.

You guys say they seem to handle as well, but how hard do you ride? I try not to ride foolishly, but in the twisties especially if following some sporties i sometimes push it very hard. So even tho you guys say they handle as well i wouldn't feel comfortable unless i knew you push your birds as hard as i do. I feel i've tested the limits of the bike and the metzelers but i fear doing that with the avons might reveal that they don't handle as well, and thats not the way i want to find that out. If i try a different tire i'm going to ride like i always do and expect them to handle as well as the metzelers. So i worry about that. Also, isn't 55 the tire's height? How much higher would that set the rider?

You will ..........NOT............ outride the limits of the Avon Cobras...I have used them for some considerable time and they will provide exactly what you are looking for.

It would sit 10mm (3/8'') higher at the back. The 50 denotes a tyre aspect ratio fo the tyre width - so 200 x 50% = 100 from rim to tyre tread. At 55 that would be 110mm.
It would of course mean that you would travel an extra 63mm (2.5'') per rev of wheel.

And some have said it makes the speedo dead on, but that can't be. A larger tire would read slower for the same distance assuming the rear wheel is used for speed...

I'm noy a boy racer and I don't do it on every curve, but I can scrape the floorboards when I want to (with the Storm/Cobra combination.) If you can lean any further than that let me know. I want to bring my camera and marshmallows and catch it on film.

How far you lean means nothing till you look at the speeds you're talking about. Lets see you scrape at 80 MPH.....you'd be leaned WAY over for that speed and testing the bike's, your's and the tires limits much further than i'd ever take it. You can scrape them at 10 mph on a switchback.....hardly testing any limits of the tire there ! On the other hand, there are times when i'm pushing the limits if the tires and bike and not close to scraping. Scraping has nothing to do with it.

Lighten up guys. The comment was a "funny." I said I'm no boy racer. When I asked my wife what she wanted for her birthday she said "Something that goes from zero to 150 in under 5 seconds." No problem. I got her a bathroom scale. Hmm, maybe I am a boy racer. I had to run like hell on that comment.

Had a heart attack for approx 10 secs as I saw the bill Euro 450 That is twice as much as I used to pay for tyres for my V Max. I will be looking at Avons next year but have bad experience with Avons on my V Max (no grip when it is wet or even damp !)

You would think in this day and age they would have invented a plastic that is better than rubber and more durable. Then again you would have thought they would have a oil substitute as well . It seems to be working fine there with good ride, handling and wear. You probably weigh a bit less and might consider less air unless you're riding two up.

LOL! Tbird specs: dry weight, 1200 Lbs. And no more flat tires.....just "cracked" tires. But on the good side, crashing would be easier and possibly even fun !
