Even I can do it

I checked my oil this morning in a bit of hurry and managed to cross thread my dipstick in the process. It wouldn't cinch down all the way as was seeping a bit of oil when I took it for a ride. Not much but enough to make me return home after about 50 miles.

At home I managed to cut away part of the plastic thread that was damaged and have got it seated reasonably well now. I will clean up the spilled oil and take it for a ride to see how it's holding.

My bike is due for a service and other stuff this week at Mickey Cohen's Motorsports which is 90 miles away so hopefully this temporary fix will get me there and I can get a new dipstick ordered asap.

I am amazed how easily the plastic threads cross threaded I didn't apply any force at all I was attempting to finger tighten the dipstick.

Plastic threads can be a pain.

Has anyone had similar experience?

Its better to strip the plastic dip than the casing it screws into. I know which I would rather change.

I just bought a new dipstick from the accessories catalog that has "Triumph" written on it. It looks really nice but was $59.00

Here's some pictures of the oil dipstick, I think the metal is harder to miss thread. And a reminder, blow the dirt and pebbles out of the oil dipstick well, it always collects debris.

Ya know, it's hard to even open a thread about cross-threading one's dipstick...

Its simple. Once you have your dipstick grasped firmly in your hand, make sure it is lined up before you start screwing.

Which bit of that do find hard

Yeah, I know, the rubber looks loose, but it screws down tight when inserted. At least this is a thread that did not mention Metzlers, oops.

Just make sure you're aiming for the right hole... unless she's into that sort of thing.

I was hoping/expecting that "cross threading the dipstick" would elicit some bawdy comments

I am not disappointed

Keep them coming (so to speak) it helps ease my embarrassment / annoyance about the issue

Yup, even before I removed the factory dipstick I used a can of air spray for dust around it to blow off all the debris (little pebbles) Sure don't want that falling inside. The new dip stick looks real nice!
