| | Posted : 20 Mar 2011 - 18:08 Post title : Dealers and Oil changes | | | First off let me say that I never take a vehicle to the dealer for an oil change, well not normally. BUT, the Thunderbird was due its 600 mile service and I figured I'd take it in and have it checked out. Waited about 2 hrs, paid more than I should have but oh well. Rode home, parked the bike and jumped in the truck to run to the hardware store. Came back and lo and behold, what's that under the Tbird? a small puddle of oil. Now I'm pissed, call the dealer, talk to the service guy and take it back down, he checks it and said the wrong torque spec was used (haven't checked but he said a different torque for new crush washer vs reused washer). Anyways, no leaks and I'm off after wasting a bit of time. That was thursday. Didn't ride the bike friday, got up early saturday to ride to work, after work get on the bike to leave and there it is again, a puddle, get home and sure enough small puddle there too. Of course the dealer was closed, and closed on sunday. I will be there when they open tomorrow, chances are I still won't be a happy camper. If I'd wanted an oil leaker, I'd have gotten a ,,,,,,,,, well never mind.
Pardon the novel.

you could check it if you have a torque wrench
i think you should ask for compensation towards travel costs as its their incompetance and your inconvenience

The first service cost $250 and i thought that was reasonable the second service $480 and on the printout the exact same stuff as the first service was done .....and im told the third service 20,000kms will cost $1,192 ... i was like for what gold plating your toolbox ????

the 500 mile service is about £100, $163 if equivelent, the second 6000 mile should be about £135. $220, the 12000 is more because they check the shims however my dealer was going to charge me over £300 $488 for the 6000 mile service , after contesting it and contacting a couple of other triumph dealers it turn out he said he was "reading the wrong thunderbird schedule" yeah right.
ask around

Said the washer wasn't seated right, something about serations or grooves on the crush washer (going to get one to check it out). Anyways, he pulled the plug, changed the washer and put new oil in it. No leaks, no drips no errors. Was going to be the last time I'd take it in, but the owner gave me a free oil change, I guess he wants to prove they can do it right the first time, next time. So I'll give them one more shot, since it'll be free. Then just me, like my other vehicles.
One question, the service manual, $125 or so in english at one place I order from, is that about the going price for the manual in english? Also mentioned a ring binder for $10. Is that needed? Prices are from Bikebandit.

Dave!!!

+1
It is a well engineered bike and easy enough to work on.
My new saying is, "If something got broke, I want to know how I broke it." Then I can fix it.
I fear the unknown. And a manual is only $39 on ebay.
