| | Posted : 19 Mar 2011 - 18:32 Post title : Today I mainly rode around on..... | | | An America. Took the Bird to the dealers todays to have the forks changed under warranty. New T Bars and new mirrors with strategic holes in the stems.
They had been winding me up all week saying they would get me a Thruxton to ride while it was being done . Unfortunatly after checking the test bikes today I was not able to ride the new Street Tripple or the new Tiger or the Roadster. A real shame and the manager was really sorry but said I could ride one any time I liked during the week but as it was Saturday all the bikes were out so would I mind riding the America as no one wants one or buys one lol.
No problem , its a bike what the hell. So I hopped on and rode home. Have to say great bike , very comfortable, sounds like a 125 . Not very powerful but usable and hangs in there at 80mph easily enough. Glad I got my bike back though you can tell the difference . Well the main difference is that the bars are very shiney and mirrors that you can see the reflection in lol. That would be my lack of cleaning then lol.
The Tbars feel identical to the stocks to me maybe a little lower , maybe. But they look so much better and guess what those oval mirrors with strategic holes in the stems let you actually see the traffic vanishing behind you without me having to pull my elbows in. Exellent.
Oh I had 1 mm left on the rear break pads as well so thsoe needed to be changed . I must monitor my rear break usage as I didnt think I used it apart from slow control . Odd to have to change them after 3k miles on the clock. Oh well, ill see if I can be bothered to get some pictures tomorrow . Very pleased with the look and service from my dealer.
North City Triumph, cant say enough good words about them have to say. They have sold 50 bikes this month thats incredible. Triumph are really rocking over here in the UK it seems. Interestingly the most bikes they are selling are TBirds and Rockets .
Sorry, rambling post but what the hell if you cant do it here where can you do it.

Birdy - I get some vibration in the mirrors, but I think it's about the same with the Tbars. It's not bad enough that I have difficulty seeing.

Now thats bizarre ! I have never ridden a bike with mirrors that clear, but are you talking about the triumph teardrops? Mine aren't clear. Enough so i can use them, but they get pretty blurry at different speeds/rpms.

The stock mirrors on my 'Bird have been the most vibration-free/usable of ANY of the bikes I've had in the last 4 years! You should have seen just how bad the vibrations were on the 2009 Triumph Sprint I had right before the Thunderbird... freaking HORRENDOUS! Any speed over 50mph and they were effectively useless. The ones on the ZX10R weren't too bad as far as vibration, but the positions were so bad as to render them pretty useless, too. Of course, they were tossed on by Kawasaki just to make it street-legal... that bike was just a track race bike with headlights, turn-signals, and a license plate.

Yep, as much as I hate the attachment, "fail safe" feature, it must add a lot of damping. The stock mirrors are bell clear at all speeds for me. But, I just knocked kittywampus, the other side mirror with a grocery bag.
Glad I know to take it apart to reset it. Those with new bikes....
DO NOT TRY TO TIGHTEN. You will break the bolt. Take it apart and reset the split ring spring.

Yep... my left mirror would NOT stay put right after I took delivery. The minute I put an allen wrench on it at home, I knew something didn't feel right as it was already pretty tight. Took it STRAIGHT back to the dealer and they took care of it for me and then sent me home with the same advice you just gave. Sometimes it's good not to be too big a guy... while my arms aren't too whimpy, I DO have a certain built-in "torque-limiter"

I took the Bird out up to 60mph and could feel no vibration in the bars , a bit of buzz in the pegs. The mirrors (Triumph oval ones yes Birdy with the drill holes in the stems) Were perfectly clear .

But i should have said aftermarket mirrors when i said all bikes are blurry. Aftermarket including accessory mirrors sold by the manufactuer, not just 3rd party. My stocks were quite clear, but most mirrors and ALL aftermarket mirrors i've tried were blurry. Been a while since i used the stockers on the Tbird so i can't recall if they were perfectly clear all the way up, but i do recall they were very clear. But i'd rather my bike look cool than be able to see.

Now that I have the Tbars and accessory mirrors I couldn't agree more. The stock handle bars never bothered me until I replaced them...

(Re: EnGage) | | | Funny you guys mentioned about the mrrors and the bolt breaking.I just ran into that last Thursday.I was goin along mindin my business, and the left mirror started moving towards me so I couldn't see anything behind me.Come to find out, that bolt was tight, but did not keep the mirror from moving. When I took it off,i just touched the screw with my allen wrench and she broke. The problem is that the fibre washer is NOT thick enough to go over the recess in the bottom of the mirror's stem.I added a thin 3/8 flat washer underneath the fibre washer so that now when ya tighten it,and without breaking it,the mirror stays put yet you can still move it.I then did the same thing to the other mirror. And BTW,the dealer did give me another mirror screw, under warantee.I know! Big *uckin Deal.lol lol lol Dave!!!

(Re: davetac1) | | | Dave - I'm not even sure the bolt does much other than keep the mirror from moving up and out of the hole over time. The inner sleeve seems to be what gives the mirror its tightness and the bolts merely pulls the mirror down into place.
I wonder if they changed the design. Mine did not come with a fiber washer, they had a "waved" metal washer (I'm sure there is a term for this style of washer, but I'm not sure what it is).

(Re: EnGage) | | | The washer that came on that screw on both mirrors is fibre. The new screw/bolt the dealership gave me also has the fibre washer. That fibre washer is supposed to be what allows the mirror to move when you push on it to adjust it.However, because the washer is so thin,it just sets there and does not really push against anything so something else has to be added in order to hold the mirror from moving when that screw is snugged. If ya pull the screw out and look at the bottom of the mirror stem, you'll see what I mean. Dave!!!

(Re: Deeuu50) | | | The stock mirrors heads that come on the T bird are ok.They don't vibrate, atleast mine don't, and that's at all speeds and engine rpm's.However, the mirror stems are alittle on the short side, meaning ya can't really see directly behind you, especially that right mirror as it sets further inboard by a good half inch or so compared to the left mirror. The mirror holes are located in different ends of the switch housings. The right mirror sets on the inboard side of the switch housing where the left mirror sets on the outboard side of the switch housing.Again, take a look at the set up and you'll see what I'm talkin about. Dave!!!

Try slimming
My stockers have no vibration and I can see fairly well no matter how much beer I sink.
Might just mill up an extender for the right hand one as I have got a throttle control that fits inbetween the throttle housing and the mirror mount.

Would love to see!
My Tiger (Steamer) is still strong - but now looking to sell to make way for the new 800XC. Which - btw - I've canceled my initial order and reordered!!!
Mmm... Actually the new Tiger that I initially ordered will be coming next week - but it has the silver frame:
It's just too much 'in ya face' for me!
I have learnt that as of this weekend Triumph will be changing their production set-up and the frame will be Graphite Grey:
So I re-ordered myself a Tiger to get the Black/Graphite Grey frame!

I must say - those Triple Engines are sweet....
Oh oh oh... And seeing your photo:
