Most of my miles are two up touring so the Victory is better suited. The ride over rough roads is much better and cornering is a little better. Lugage/wind protection is obviously a lot better. Monday morning rode for a hour at just above freezing without feeling cold at all. If the digital mpg reading on the bike can be believed it averaged 57.2 two up albeit all fairly steady with missus on the back.
Thunderbird engine/gearbox and clutch are superior but overall the Vic has got the nod.
Blame Triumph for dumping my local dealer (Windy Corner) and him switching to Victory.
Sorry.

Yep, it sure is a big bike, but Victory did a hell of a job on it and I'm sure it'll make a great touring bike (hence the name). As it is, I couldn't be happier that I went with the Thunderbird... now I've got a bike that'll be a great tourer (for me) AND and fun around-town bike.

Seriously, enjoy your ride...the bike has got to fit you...good luck.
The only thing I have against it is two words: air cooled...air cooled...air cooled...been there done that and those days are way in the past for me...but to each their own.

I had the same issue a few years ago after my Valkyrie Interstate got totaled, I shopped around and test rode the a Victory, liked it a lot. Ending up getting a Triumph Rocket though.
After spending two years trying to make the Rocket into a tourer, sold it and got a Goldwing, as I do a lot of long distance highway riding, the wing was just the better fit.
But for Christmas 2010 my lovely (and great) wife bought me the Thunderbird!
Now I have the best of both world's, a great touring bike and a great street rod!

Well, it's actually oil and air-cooled, but yeah... that fact and the extra weight (and the extra price!) was what finally pushed it down my shopping list. Still, it's a nicely-built, purpose-built machine and, if money (and storage space) was no object, I'd like to have one. But... I sure as hell wouldn't give up my beloved 'Bird for it!
Though, I'm sure he'll love it for 2-up touring!

Sometimes function over form is definatly the way if you are touring . Probably the ugliest bike I have ever seen though for me. But that said it does what it says on the tin and thats all that matter best wishes ride safe.

i pick up bits sometimes for the t140 from superior in earl sommit and often called into windy corner, place was too small for new triumph and their big corporate ideals. cosy dealer though and did a lot for triumph when they frst set off. last visit the place was full of strange machines with buck rogers styling. if i got one it would have been the lime green and black hammer, scary stuff. loved the rocket they customised with the zard exhaust, neaarly bought it when it came back in. made the new roadster look soft.
enjoy

It undoubtedly had the most comfortable bike seat I have ever sat on. It handled and rode very well and the fit and finish were great. I was impressed. The Triumph power and synergy were not quite there, FOR ME, but overall it is a very nice machine. Would I trade the Thunderbird for one? Nope. But that is exactly why they make different bikes. Could I live with the Cross Country? It would be my very close second choice.
Safe and happy riding! You have a beautiful machine there!

| | Posted : 19 Mar 2011 - 12:53 Post title : Re: Selling Thunderbird for Victory Cross Country (Re: narsisco_lopez) | | | "Well, it's actually oil and air-cooled"...actually all motorcycles are oil and air cooled. But if it is strictly air cooled you are dealing with ambient temperature as a cooling medium. With the water cooled engine as the water circulates thru the block it is being returned to the radiator to go thru another cool down phase. With the air being pulled thru the radiator by the fan it helps get rid of the heat of the water as it goes thru the radiator. So in a sense you are getting three types of cooling on a water cooled engine (water, oil and air) while in an air cooled engine you get only two (oil and air).
When I first saw the Victory line I got a good chuckle out of the "oil cooled" feature as if it was a tremendous leap in technology which it actually isn't. It's not a bad one...it's just that there is better out there and I prefer it instead.
Since I traded in my 1986 Yamaha Virago 1100 in 1991 I have never gone back to just an air cooled engine.

She wouldn't get on a bike after a spin on my GPz 750 turbo years ago, so keeping her happy is a priority.
If the bike was just for me I'd stick with the thunderbird, can't afford both unfortunately.
