| | Posted : 14 Mar 2011 - 13:44 Post title : Back from Bike Week | | | Not much to say about bike week, other than I am sick and FN tired of Harleys. Did'nt see many Triumphs and only talked to two Triumph owners. The rest was same old same old. Nice ride up to St Augustine and down to Deland but the highlight was the ride home. I told the guys I was with that there would be one empty space on the trailer and I hit I-95 runnin. 3 traffic jams (20 min. each), 3 fuel stops/break (one hour total) a Red Bull and One 5 Hour Energy, back in Lake Wylie SC in 8 hours. I rode the Thunderbird hard with 1200+ miles and a proper break in under my belt. I ran with 2 guys on BMW's who were agressive and fast, and They kept trying to lose me ,but the bird is the word. Don't get me wrong ,these guys hade a lot of experience and after about an hour ,they lost me weaving in and out of tiny spaces glued to each other like they were on one bike. At that point a biker on a 103 C/I Harley (same bike a friend has) hooked up with me and away we went.I can't tell you how many bikes and trailers we passed but after 20 min. with this dude and we were back in with the Beemers. They all left me at SC-26,but the bottom line,6 hours riding 480 miles covered and I felt like I was on my easy chair back home. I love this bike.It is the best cruiser I have ever owned,(#5) When I got sick of standing around with the Harley crowd I was with,I took my wifes advise when she says "Quit talking about motorcycles and just go ride the flippin thing" Amen,T.R. Most important: did you see lots of babes in Daytona (photos would be appreicated! ) I was very surprised that me, a geezer rider, was following my friends on BMW R1200RT and a VRod on the serious curves and they could not shake me at all.

I had guys riding HDs try to keep pace with me on the way down and back from Daytona but they did not like to ride at 85 - 90... The bird seems to really like it around 80 though.

You are preaching to the choir, buddy!
Ever since I installed the Corbin Contraband fairing, my 'Bird REALLY likes it around 90-95!

Get some... I found above 80 the Bird really starts to drink the fuel. I was doing a steady 90 with spurts over 110 for most of the 350 mile trip with a stout head wind. The combination of these factors produced 32 MPG with the 1700 motor. Fun costs money...
Durability side note:
1. 350 miles from home to Daytona running 90 most of the way. 2. 350 miles from Daytona to home running 80 most of the way except when I was stuck in traffic for almost an hour and a half... 3. 300 miles riding in Daytona. 4. 1000 miles total in four days. 5. 1700 BB kit installed when the bike had 7500 miles on it. 6. Began trip with 9000 miles on the bike and 1500 miles on the BB kit. 7. No oil consumption, no water consumption, no leaks, and no anomalies. It ran flawlessly, not to mention dusting a few V-twins during the adventure for GP (general practice). Aside for the ravenous fuel appetite I am very pleased and could not ask for better.

Ya ,we trailered down.My friends came from snow country and I took the easy way out from South Carolina. However, this was a vacation not a weekend trip.Teach me how to get 9 days worth of clothes, underwear, socks,(I don't do laundry on vacation)2 hemets, leathers, gloves, cleaning supplies( for the bike and me)and a swim suit and work out stuff on the back and I will ride both ways. Hell,I was lucky they dropped my bags off on the way home LOL... Yep the 1700 loves 80 MPH Next year,I'm just riding down for 3 or 4 days and that will fit on the bike.

The nice thing about about jeans is that you only need to wash them twice a year packing for 9 days on a motorcycle is easy is easy. Even my wife can do it.

Everyone seems to prefer the long haul.
just curious

My buddies and I go down every year for a "man" trip. If you are looking for some people to ride down with and the dates match, look me up.

Took one small sport bag for ten days in the states. Wore my bike gear for riding then changed into jeans on night + 3 tshirts and changes of socks etc. Bulkiest thing was my boots that I took to wear instead of biking boots. Will be doing the same for 10 dayer in Europe + Mrs1600 is coming this time so it looks like I could be taking less. I never camp so I dont have all that shit to carry around.

That's how it is with me, my motorcycle gear is what takes room - especially in the spring when the weather changes a lot.
