From Motorcycle magazine -

What's been the most challenging bike you've produced? Was it worth the effort?

- '' The Thunderbird was an extremely hard bike to produce. While the package was there, the first prototype bikes didn't have the right character. It wasn't fun to ride and we were determined it was going to be right before releasing it. We extended the project by a further six months and eventually got it just as we wanted it. The biggest problem was the bike had too much torque. In the end we added inertia to the crankshaft and the bike was a dream to ride. It was definitely worth the extra effort.''

WTF?

Can anyone please explain what a bike with "too much torque" would not somehow ride right?

There must be a bit more to it. Triumph was done with the bottom end-when they did final testing they did not like it-revamped the entire case and had to scrap the tooling and start over. Not something to take lightly. The motor they have is the motor they think they should build.

Too much torque? It exists. Where? Not sure, lol. But I rode a modded R3 for two years and that bike had a boatload.

Anyway, there was a nice article on this very point almost 2 years ago when the 'Bird came out. Simon went over the "porkchop" thing in a lot of detail. CycleWorld, I think. Mark Hoyer, if I remember correct was the writer.

sounds like the odd butterfly dooohik they put on the camshaft to smooth it out. When it spins it opens out making friction and adding power smoothly to the shaft ....or something like that. WTF do I know.

Amazing that NOBODY at the factory or dealer can tighten hose clamps before the consumer get their bike.

Brilliant! They reduced the torque so they could sell the BB kit to increase the torque!
