Triumph wouldn't do anything about the design flaw in their bag lids , the cheap plastic material that detachs from the lids and allows them to sag. My dealer said that Triumph referred to it as cardboard instead of plastic.

I took them to a local shoe repair shop and they got the material back in place and ran stitching over the top just like the inside of the lid is stitched. looks good and solved the problem, lid is nice and straight

Also on the outside bag strap where the buckle is and has three holes in it from the factory. It was sagging pretty bad so they punched another hole above these as for up as possible and now 75% of the sag is gone.

Total cost : bag stiching $ 15.00

four holes punched $ 3.00

Triumph bags are junk. At least the ones I got with the 07 America under the accesory promotion. The small bags lasted just over one year, and fell apart. I think their bags are like pressed leather or some kind of animal parts that don't last. At least I could use the buckles, I found a belt that fit and wear now.
I got the Saddleman slant bags on both bikes, while not the best, they look good. And have held up longer than the the OEM. I may get Hardstreets for touring, and may just paint them white.

I really hate to rain on your parade but I tried that very thing and it only prolonged the sagging process. Mine finally bit the dust after only a year and I had them replaced under warranty. They need a stiff support under the lid to prevent them from sagging.

For $15.00 or so I may give this a try, mine are doing the same thing.

Good idea,

Took mine today to George's Shoe Repair in Delray Beach and he said the new bags I got are NOT leather but vinyl. They too are starting to sag but he will stitch them up this week. Photos to follow. Anyone had long term luck with this repair or are we doomed. Hey there is a 2 year warranty...Wonder if Triumph reads forums like this? I'm on the fence if your reading about buying another Triumph.....

After these finish destroying themselves they will be replaced with some type of hard bag. Am already looking for their replacement.

It would be wonderful if Triumph Motorcycle Company acknowledges that ALL the bags are defective and there needs to be a better fix than just replacing the crappy bags with the same crappy bag. So Triumph, step up to the plate here and offer us Thunderbird owners a trade in program for these lousy leather bags for some well made hard bags........happy riders stick with the brands they like.

I can't speak for yours, but my bags are definitely leather - not a doubt. In fact, they seem to be nice leather and not overly processed like modern car seats. I wonder if your shoe guy has sniffed too much show dye

Quick question. As far as the warranty goes, does it matter if you've switched over to easy/edge brackets? I would think its unrelated, but who knows what would void a warranty on the leather itself...

Thanks.

Rode over to George today and he said-yep they are Vinyl-I just got these bags, the old ones were leather for sure. I do trust George-the last of the one man shoe repair shops. He rides a BMW Airhead and is not a stoner. He said they are better than Leather and lets hope they last. Can't imagine that the EZ Brackets would void warranty.......The more I think about the mission of the SE package on the T Bird the more I think it should have had hard bags. When you send back the bags for warranty no one asks about the brackets. I don't think anyone would notice an extra well punched hole in the bags if that is your concern.

I don't see why the bracket would matter either.

Triumph must have changed their material because mine are leather. They may have gotten complaints about water spotting.

Concerning the plastic becoming detached, I don't think it needs to be attached at the front and I suspect Triumph has a reason for not attaching it. What I think is happening is that when the plastic top stiffener is sewn to the back of the bags, it torques, which cause a bow in front.

Rode into town and picked up my Saddlebags. George did an "X shaped" stitch to keep the middle from sagging. They look good and he swears they are Vinyl, NOT LEATHER.. He said to use ArmorAll on them to keep them shiny and new looking. It cost me $40 for both so more than others here have paid but he is a fellow biker and I'm glad to support a small one man shop. I saw a lot of other bike related gear in there as well. Now time will tell how these new bags from Triumph hold up. The buckles are starting to tarnish so I hit them with some rubbing compound and they are shiny. Next I will hit them with some Flitz metal polish to keep them looking new.

I had some leather Saddlemen Brand bags and they did have massive white spots and literally fell apart in less than a year.

Hard bags are the way to go in the long run.

Best,

Capt T

It's easy to tell. First look at the back of the leather and you should see a suede finish. Second, leather has a unique feel - it is warmer and softer that vinyl. Third, sprinkle water drops on the top of the bag and see if the bags "spot". If they do, you have leather. Fourth, use leather conditioner to remove the spots. If it soaks in, as opposed to "smearing" around, you have leather.

Also note that Triumph still states they are leather on their web site. They may be lying, but why risk it?

Those look good

As far as hard bags go, they are not for me, they look to art deco for my taste.
