| | Posted : 10 Feb 2011 - 07:28 Post title : The Thunderbird has landed | | | I picked up my new T-bird yesterday and all I can say for the short 30 miles I put on it before I got it home is....OH YEEEEAAAAAHHH!
The OEM pipes sounded great, had great pick up in speed, plenty of torque, the windshield kept the wind off and it was a great homecoming present.
More later with pics. Like the stock mirrors way better than the stock Rocket mirrors...and why couldn't Triumph give the Rocket this exhaust note?
These next 11 days are going to be tooooo short.

If you like the rumble that the OEM pipes have - then try the OEM TORs (Triumph Off Roads) They really GROWLE under load...

Can I throw ya one better? After a bit more than 1 and 1/2 years i feel much MORE excited about mine after the BB kit ! My level of happiness with it at this point is well past what it was right after delivery. Every morning i wake up with fingers crossed that it won't be too cold to ride to work. Unfortunately i can't handle the recent temps. It was 35 this morning. And i'm almost done with all the upgrade i wanted from the start. only the chrome pulley remains on the list, and it shall be mine next time i'm up for a new rear tire.

I'm sort of glad I DON'T have the BB Kit... I'm still so extremely pleased with my bike the way it currently sits (of course, the short TORs DID go on during her very first service). When I pull the trigger on the BB kit after she breaks 12K miles it'll be like getting a new bike without giving up my beloved 'Bird.

yeah, i felt the same way....as you said, "sort of". I also felt damn, i spent 12k on the much less fun 1600. But i know what you mean and i also felt that way too. I did the same....waited till the 12k service figuring the $ i save by not having to pay the $600 for 12k valve adjustment/service would go towards the BB making it cheaper. You may be happy as is, but obviously not 100% or you wouldn't be doing the BB ! I happen to think however that even those who are happy with the 1600 would be thrilled with the BB improvement and would likely lust after that after testing one. people sometimes don't realize it's not just about faster. it's also about that feeling of immense power and the low end torque and ability to pass easier and all that. Sheer speed and acceleration doesn't even have to interest you at all to appreciate the 1700.
But possibly the biggest reason to BB a 1600 instead of buying it off the floor that way is that i was told the stock 1700 has milder cams than those which come in the kit. So a BB'd 1600 may be a bit stronger. May or may not be true, but the person who told me would be more likely to know than pretty much anyone else aside from certain privileged people at Hinckley. I find it hard to believe because if thats the case it would mean triumph is selling a aftermarket kit as legal when it's not. But who knows

Daz...
I'm VERY happy as is... probably because I HAVEN'T YET ridden one with the BB kit. There's also the not-so-small fact that I only weigh 145lbs, so the stock 1600 with short TORs is shear pleasure... both in town jumping off the line or up in the Colorado mountain roads.
It's just all you wankers ( ) with either a factory 1700 or kit installed (and your non-stop ranting about how AMAZING the extra low-end torque is) have me drooling to experience it myself!
Oh, and yes... if I'm gonna drop in the area of $400 to $600 for a 12K valve adjustment (prices vary WILDLY!), I might as well opt for the kit and get, what basically amounts to, a brand-new engine. Of course, I'll then have to go through that excruciating break-in period all over again. Oh well... small price to pay for all that extra torque, right?

I'm also on your side of the fence, Pappa: the whole reason for getting the Thunderbird was for long-distance riding and that's where the bulk of my motorcycle budget this winter has gone... into farkles to make my big (and the few not-so-big) summer tours more comfortable, organized, and enjoyable.
I just didn't realize that when I picked a bike for touring, I'd also be getting a bike that satisfied my "hooligan" side as well and the big bore kit is speaking directly to the "hooligan" in me.

I have also heard that sometime in the past year (?) that they made changes to the OEM long pipes...what I heard when I opened it up was sweeeet. I am going to visit Daryl in Crestview, FL this Saturday and listen to his Hogslayers and see if there is that much of a difference. All I know is that if there were not any aftermarket pipes available at all...I could easily live with these pipes with no problem...but when I listen to Daryl's pipes I may change my mind...who knows.
Got my 2011 Ford F150 Lariat Super Crew today as well...it's almost like Christmas.
Take care guys and thanks for all the "therapy" that you all admistered to me while I was waiting to come home to this...I am cured!
It's been pretty overcast out here since I've been home hopefully it will be cleared up some today or tomorrow so that I can get some decent pictures to post of the bike and my new truck.
