We actually had a decent 45* day where the roads weren't wet and the de-icer should have been washed off from rain, so I fired up the bird and went for about a 10 mile ride, just enough to make me want to keep going.

It was Aug. 25th (6 months ) when I rode her last due to having my left ankle fused, because of the fusion I can't rotate my foot in and I could just barely touch the shifter to shift so I made a new shift lever using a longer bolt, slid the rubber onto a split sleeve and put that on the bolt, and a 1/2" spacer next to the shifter. testing this was my main reason for going for the short ride and it worked out great.

Spring can't get here fast enough this year, my Brother and I have been mapping out rides already too.

Hey RedBird, glad to hear you got back in the saddle... even if it was just a short one. I'd be interested in seeing a photo of the work you did on your shifter.

Cheers!

Oh geez...sorry to hear that. I feel for ya. It would kill me to go 6 months....i'd go thru probably $500 worth of wax and other detailing products !
Well, at least you got a few miles in and know you can ride now. Nice job on the shifter. Amazing what a biker will do to ensure he can still ride !

Hope these show enough, not the prettiest solution but it works, I am going to try and find a stainless bolt and spacer cause I think these might rust but they are cheap to replace.

Thanks for posting that photo. The reason I was asking, is that the shifter is the one place on my 'Bird I'm not totally happy with. I've missed third gear a few times because of the way my boot fits under it. And now that I've got my Sidi Discovery rain boots, the fit is even tighter. It will probably get better as they break in, but I'd love to be able to adjust the gap for a better fit. I'm not a floorboard kind of guy and while the Sidis are a bit bulky, they are very comfortable and will keep me dry on my big summer ride that's coming up. To be honest, I haven't looked closely at the shifter yet to see what my options might be. If anyone has any tips, I'd love to hear 'em.

I am sure you can adjust the hieght of the gear shift by adjusting the linkage that connects it to the g/box selecter shaft. I have no probs with it but I do need to have my back brake lever adjusted so it is closer to me. I seem to have to shift round a bit to get a good push on it. But thats cos i,m a short arse. So thats my next comfort move.

I'm sure you can adjust it up and down, if you think what I did will help at all it is all from the local Ace hardware.

The shifter height is adjustable by adjusting the linkage between the lever and the transmission.

No need to adjust the linkage. All you have to do is loosen the bolt that holds that shifter arm to the shaft and slide it off the shaft. It is splined and can be put back on either up or down till you are comfortable. I mived mine down 1 tooth. I didn't like where the factory had it.

Everytime I ride, I seem to have the same routine. I go out for 10 or 15 miles, head back to the neighborhood intending to go home, turn around, and go back out for another 15 - 20 miles. Then I do it again. It really is hard to stop riding the thing.....

Welcome aboard Jeff!!

I really didn't want to put mine away after such a short ride and knowing it will be several weeks before the weather cooperates again.
