| | Posted : 17 Jan 2011 - 10:43 Post title : Triumph Fog Light Install | | | Hi All
I am sure it has been covered before but I fitted up my fog light kit at the weekend and just wanted to report back (beats working!)
First impressions of the kit is that it is expensive for what you get (got mine on a deal with my ex-demo vehicle). But, as you start to work with it you realise the money goes into the design and pretty good quality of the kit. Everything fits and the ease of joining to the existing loom is nice. Also, the way you utilise stock parts such as the indicators with new brackets/cable routers is pretty inspired.
The biggest job was lifting the bike off the ground. Thanks for the advice on this. I ended up with a 6" x 14" piece of pine plank on my bike lift. So all the weight was on the sump and cat box. Then I had the usual trip out to get a spindle key as I have never had a bike that used one in the past ... always annoying when starting a job that another tool is required!
The brakes were off easy (lots of clearance on this bike which I like - some bikes are so tight that it is tricky to refit the caliper, etc), wheel out (feels like a pretty heavy item to me - anyone fitted carbon wheels yet ), mudguard off, yokes loosened, etc. All easy and so nice working on a new bike with decent stainless fittings that are not seized. It is just a lot of trouble to go to the remove the indicator clamps!
Midway through I had a thought ... it does happen sometimes . Why not just take the weight off the front wheel - remove the steering head top bolt, loosen the top yoke pinch bolts and lift the whole lot up and off in order to removed the indicator clamps? Seems a lot faster to me and I have done it on my Bonnie in the past. I am sure there is a reason not to do this but does anyone know?
Once this was done the rest was easy but quite time consuming. The kit has quite a few bits and I wanted to get the set up right and use thread lock where I could. Feeding the wires through the light bar is fiddly. I had to clamp the indicators in a workbench to remove the spacers which were pretty stiff (thread lock of some sort on them). Extended wiring loom took any hassle out of the electrical side of things and it's nice to have a use for the switch on the handlebars! Good forward thinking on Triumphs part - a modular approach. Shame the indicator clamps are not double sided so they can just be removed - guess they have to allow dealers to make money some how!
Anyway - all good - like the look of them and hope they provide some decent additional lighting on the dark spring evenings.
All the best, Lee.

What I am saying is, skip all the front wheel and mudguard removal stuff. Raise the bike up to take weight off the forks. Undo the top yoke pinch bolts and steering head top bolt and lift the bars and top yoke up (i.e. leave the bottom yoke pinch bolts done up and the wheel, etc in place. Seems an easier way than the instructions suggest. But, it was just a thought. All the best, Lee.

The rest of the job is easy but time consuming. Any questions just PM but I doubt there will be. All fits together very nicely.
I'll probably 'upgrade' the standard bulbs in the kit (to Osram or Phillips things) but I think they are H3 35Watt ... want to check them first before I order on fleabay. Tempted to go up to 55Watt H3 bulbs as I would hope the loom could cope with an extra 4 amps (total) ... if anyone has any thoughts please let me know.
All the best, Lee.

I'm about to install a set of Triumph auxiliary lights and agree that this process seems like a lot of work to remove the indicators. My thoughts are to loosen both top and bottom triple tree mounts, raise the bike up enough for the top of the forks to allow the removal of the indicators, and then lower the bike back down and retighten/torque the triple tree clamps. It appears that you only have to raise the bike approx 1.5 inches to have enough clearance to remove the indicator mounts. There appears to be enough 'slack' in brake lines etc. This process would overcome the need to remove the front guard, front brakes and the front wheel. Can anyone tell me if they have either done this or if they can advise me if I am missing something and there is a reason why I cannot just raise the bike as I have described? Help!!!!!!!!

| | Posted : 13 Aug 2011 - 12:06 Post title : Re: Triumph Fog Light Install (Re: Kp1062) | | | I did just that: raised the bike, undid & lowered the wheel/fork/mudguard assembly, slid indicators off, lifted front end assembly back in. Managed it solo easily. I did put off doing it for months after I read the instructions.
WARNING!! Whilst reassembling everything, there's a couple of stainless bolts (6 or 8mm) that go underneath, into the lower yolk. The torque setting is predictably low, I think it's around 10Nm. So, out with my trusty and very expensive dinky torque wrench and BANG! The bugger snapped the bolt off. I assure you I set the wrench correctly. I was so traumatised, I went in for a lie down. I laid there imagining what i had to do to remedy the sheared (torqued) bolt - strip front end, ship yolk off for specialist stainless steel extraction, reassemble front days/weeks later. *$@**@!£$%!!!
After some deep counselling from Mrs.Ted - "Get back out there, you daft sod." - I removed the lower plate, to find there was about 2mm of the bolt protruding, enough to get a grip. Thank you God.

| | Posted : 07 Aug 2013 - 14:12 Post title : Re: Triumph Fog Light Install (Re: Swagger) | | | I installed the aux lights also, as for the indicator removal I raised the bike off the ground loosened the top and bottom yoke pinch bolts and with the help of a friend carefully as to not scratch the chrome slid the forks down with the front wheel in place. Once you have the forks out of the top yoke enough, slid off the indicators and then slide the forks back. tighten the bottom yoke pinch bolts, lower the bike to place weight on the front and tighten the top yoke pinch bolts. Thats the hardest part done, the rest is time consuming but easy. Final result is well worth the effort.

I have just bought a 2011 T Bird ( What a machine I am so pleased its all I wanted and more)with the aux bracket and lights already installed. Hoowever after taking it out in the dark I noticed the headlamp was running a bit out to one side. No problem I thought, just slacken the bolt and give it a slight nudge simple!! However as we all know nothing ever is! The bolt is covered by the aux light mountings! So be warned before fitting check your headlight alignment first.

| | Posted : 11 Jan 2014 - 03:34 Post title : Re: Triumph Fog Light Install (Re: bikerdick2011) | | | Hey all. I have these fog lamps on order and reading through the instructions and information on this site i have a couple of questions so i can plan my plan of attack.
1. Is the removal of the front tyre and guard required or is this mainly to stop crap falling on it causing damage. I note on page 5 and 6 in the instructions that you still have to slide the fork out.
2. Either way i will be required to lift the bike.. What are the best places to lift or lift just the front end.. I have use of a forklift so can either lift the whole bike and secure it or just lift he front end for the period that is requires to lower the forks and tke the inducators off and re fit.. I do have dresser bars but noe sure if they are a good lifting place..
Any help on fitting these fog lamps would be great..
