Hi All..... Just gotta tell you about my Thunderbird experience;

First up my Name is Peter and I was lucky to be born in the greatest Country on Earth. I turned 50 last October (Could this be a change of life experience?) and have decided to take the plunge and get my wings (having limited experience on farm bikes during my teens). I have always loved cruisers..... not particularly any models although HD took my fancy (shame about the price tag).

About 3 months ago I stumbled across an article about the "Bird"... I googled it and BANG.... Love at first site.

I can tell you that the past 3 months has been a hectic "love affair".... hours spent on youtube, living on the Triumph site and reading every post 100 times on this fantastic site (I feel I know most of you like friends).

My plan has now been hatched.... I have booked in for my brief (early Jan.)... I'm looking for a mid sized machine and have settled on a 2002-2008 Yamaha V650 classic (I'm a big unit) to get some experience on..... mid 2011 at the latest, I will be shopping for a blue and white (might not be the fastest color.... but it floats my boat ) with short tors, twin t bar handles, chrome swinging arm covers and one of those little digital gizmo's to tell what gear I'm in hehehehe.

Until then my Wife will still think I'm having it off with a girl called "Blue Bird"

Merry Christmas to all and have a Safe and Happy time.

Do yourself a huge favor....get the 1700 version. having had both i can say w/o reservation it lives up to what you'd expect from a bike in the category. While i liked mine as a 1600 a lot, i didn't feel it did. Its WAY more fun now ! Unless you can't possibly afford it or to you power and acceleration means nothing, go 1700 w/o a doubt. Oh, and the short pipe look, sound, and perform even better. A no brainer. 1700 w/shorties=heaven. By the way....whats up with the black text? I highlighted it to read it, but otherwise it would be impossible to see.

Welcome,

It was love at first sight for me too, I had gone with my Brother to get a new tire on his bike, while waiting I was looking around the showroom and there she was, after a couple of weeks of research I went and got her, this was May 2010 and don't regret it one bit.

Hope you get your bird soon

Good on ya Pete.
You would think that once you have the Bird the novelty would wear off after awhile and the passion would slowly melt away.
I am here to tell you the reverse happens so be prepared!
It will undoudtedly ruin your present life and you wont care because you have the coolest bike ever to cruise around on. I have the 1600 and still have my licence, but am thinking at the 20K service I may get the kit. I had the BC hogslayers 4 weeks before I bought the bike and love the notes they put out. I even went shopping with my wife the other day because she said "lets take the bike". See life changing.
By the way who said B/W wasn't the fastest?

I can testify that my "love at first sight" has become "true love". Hands down, my (blue and white) 'Bird is the best bike I've ever owned (and I've owned a bunch). Such a great match for me... and I was a dedicated sport bike guy!

While I couldn't bare to have her motor torn down while she's still so new (just turned 2800 miles today), I MAY consider the big bore kit after we finish our planned 10,000 mile ride this summer!

By the way... bikes aren't fast, riders are

Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions..... Sorry about the stuff up with the font color Daz, hopefully its a leaning experience and is rectified.... As for the BB kit, I will seriously be looking at that once I stretch my wings I'm guessing the stock Bird will be more than enough to keep me aroused

Redbird.... Know how ya feel mate.... I haven't felt this dizzy since I started secondary school. I'm fairly confident from reading all of the posts that the love affair will prosper for many years.

Thunder.... Good to see your not too far from me mate (2hrs down the highway). As soon as I take delivery, I will touch base with you and arrange a day out (Great Ocean Rd sounds inviting).... "Scudbird now leans close to simon_Thunder so noone else can hear" The Blue and White Combo is the best by a country mile!

narsisco.... Hear what you're saying about the Blue and White and agree with the Bikes and Riders observation.... I'm tipping I will be one of those at the rear of the pack and enjoying the experience whilst arriving 30 minutes later than my mates

Druid.... Gee I hope I haven't stirred the pot too much about the color combo's, although I notice it seems to be a fair theme throughout the site hahahaha.... Look truth be known.... They all look Great (I just want one), but the Blue and white is on top of the list for me

It's especially good to be exchanging comments with you guys, as I said before.... I've read most of your posts and I respect your opinions immensley.

Cheers
Pete

Hi Scudbird
You will love the Bird when you get it. Just cannot stay off mine. By getting the blue and white you will shoot straight to the top of the classiest and coolest TBird club, Black is just the undercoat waiting for some imagination

I got my bird when I turned 50 as well. It was a b-day present to myself.

I got my wings by putting a few thousand miles on a Bonneville first. I think you're plan of riding a smaller bike for a bit should pay off and is wise. It will give you more confidence when you switch to the bird.

Welcome to the club

Love at 1st sight can happen repeatedly, especially with someone as young as you. I've had lots of bikes and many of them have been purchased because of this phenomenon. I'd have to say that with the Bird it's a VERY strong thing. Just got mine out of the shop (turned out to be a very minor thing that Triumph took care of quickly), and I was a little pissed off at her and intended to leave her in the garage and ignore her for awhile as punishment, but then I got her home and just looked at her for a bit, and now I've decided I'll take her out again tomorrow. I'm pretty sure MY color is the fastest. You'll love it. This is a helluva a bike.

Thanks EnGage.... I'm hoping to get some miles done on one day of the weekend and to and from work on the smaller bike.... I figure if I'm going to invest so much cash on a good bike (the best bike), I will want to be fairly competent before I upgrade.... Gee it will be hard waiting though

Silver. It reflects those harmful rays that are so easily absorbed by the black ones which slow them down so much. Actually I fully intended to go blue and white, but just kinda fell for this one while I was lookin at them on the show room floor. Regardless of color TBIRDS rule!!
