Wuhu.!..what rpm? Did you feel any limiting? There's supposed to be something up there to limit the top speed, I think.

I've not gone that fast.

I'm pretty sure the limiter is somewhere around 135-140 like the R3. I did 120 when it was a 1600, but it gets there a hell of a lot faster now. Before you'd get to about 105 and then it would slowly creep up. Now it goes to 120 like it used to to 100. I would have tried to see where the top is but the cars in front of me that were way ahead suddenly were right there as you can imagine. 120 is about 4500 RPM. In top gear you get 15 MPH for every 500 RPM's. 105 is 4k, 120 is 4.5, etc. As you can see this bike is geared for a amazing top speed at redlne.....do the math, i'm not even going to say it because it sounds too high to be real. But i have noticed as i said that every 500 RPM's gets you 15 MPH more, and i have tested that from 70 MPH up to 120 and it holds true. But of course you would probably have to have another 50 HP or more to pull the theoretical redline on this thing if it weren't limited.

top speed and top theoretical speed are quite different.

top speed is sea level, flat road, good gas, and good road. full leathers, helmet, and a prayer to your God and to the no-police God.

then lay it out and watch the needle.

top theoretical speed is easier and legal: 6th gear. go to 3250 RPM. see speed is 70 mph. you can multiply RPM by two to get to redline. and 70 times 2 = 140 mph... . less the 5-10 % speedo error unless you have changed tires to calibrate to speedo.

I myself have NEVER broken the legal speed limit at sea level.

PS When going that speed, do not look down and wonder what would happen if the belt were thrown...

and make sure your insurance is paid up so you don't need to look for a new insurer with a reckless speed ticket.... or a photo finish...

Not sure why you find that you get 70 MPH at 3250 Teebird, but mine does almost 80 at 3000 RPMs. I figure 75 after speedo error. So i'm figuring around 165 theoretical. And theoretical top speed means IF the bike could pull it. Thats why i said it would probably take another 50 HP to do it. Thinking about it, i imagine even more than that.

Daz: the 3250/70 was based on memory, since there is ice on the roads here. perhaps I was in 5th gear when I did that..

anyway: I think only 20 more horsepower will take these things to top speed, or a two-tooth change in gearing, although that will reduce top speed it will allow the 1700 torque to get there.. that would be about 140 true mph.

I was going uphill on I-15 and looked at my speedo, it said 95 mph. Looked at the tach and it was around 4250-4500. I figured that wasn't right, so i tapped the heel shifter and up-shifted to 6th. RPM's dropped to around 3500- 3700. Took the bike to 105 and backed off due to the amount of cars slowing down on the uphill. Can't remember my rpm's because I was watching the cars and not the gauges.

It would be nice if 6th was a tad bit higher gear, but normally I cruise at 70-75 so it's no deal breaker.

So that what the blue blur was that went by me on the 405. I could probably do it on the 210 coming home from work, 100 was good enough for me, the exit was coming up too fast.

Oh god no ! I'd be afraid to do more than about 80 on the 405 ! Thats not a freeway, it's a parking lot !

Oh hell yeah ! Thats the one thing about testing it's limits here. A ticket at those kinda speeds would be horrific. No doubt in the $1000+ range. To be able to legally go for it....well....in your place i would likely go for top speed. I bet 140 if the limiter doesn't kick in. Mine was gaining fast at 120 and i only shut it off because i was coming up scary fast on traffic. Gotta get her out in the desert next summer well broken in and with synthetic. I remember putting dino oil in my speedmaster and it felt like i lost 4-5 HP. Anxious to see how it feels when the 1700 is broken in and filled with synth.
