The loan amount showed up in my account totals this morning so now I am the proud owner of a new 2010 Triumph Phantom Red Haze 1700 Thunderbird. I don't know where it is (still enroute to the dealer from California), haven't ridden it, haven't see it but I'm sure it exists somewhere . Here is to hoping that I'll get to ride it in February .
Now to, hopefully, pay that sucker off by May.
Oh...and what a great birthday present to myself today .

Uh....i wasn't sure whether to say this, but if this is a Ca. model you do realize it will have the California evaporative loss emissions system on it, right? Just thought you should know.

Where are the catalytic converters on the Thunderbird anyway...in the pipes themselves?

I could use one as i've got more of a drag bar set up which means looking down isnt too comfortable. Unfortunately I have my Garming hiden under the little cowel so there isnt much room left.

It's a system with canisters and hoses made to catch and reintroduce any fuel vapors that would otherwise escape. The reason i don't like them is they are another thing to go wrong as mine did on the speedy, plus just a lot of garbage on the bike. heres the EVAP system...

I somehow think it keeps the gas less pressurized and thus cooler. But, I don't really know. And it's extra weight and as the daz says, more kit to break. And on a completely separate and personal note.

| | Posted : 01 Dec 2010 - 02:48 Post title : Re: I now own it....just don't know where it is (Re: daz) | | | I just got an e-mail from my mechanic at D&D Cycles who is the co-owner and he said that all Triumphs are now 50 state legal so there is no difference. Now does that mean that if you took off some of the "kit" that would make it more "palatable" to CA will it run better or better mileage? That may be another question to ask him. But I have a feeling it is pretty much tied together so it I/we may just have to live with it.
Keets, I haven't got the Dakota Digital dash yet. I am going to ride the bike the 12 days I'm home and over the summer when I return for good and see how I like the current gage set up. Depending on whether it "bothers" me or not I will decide probably in September whether to go that route. If I also have the R3T at that time since it has the same tank top gage cluster I may do it as well. The advantage to having the two bikes at that time will mean that I can have one in the shop getting fitted with the Dakota and still have one to ride. When it gets done then I'll get the second one in and have it done.

| | Posted : 01 Dec 2010 - 04:28 Post title : Re: I now own it....just don't know where it is (Re: molinoman) | | | It will be interesting to read your take on the 1700 compared to the R3 once you get a few miles on it. I felt the 1600 wasn't remotely close, and while the 1700 doesn't seem to be real close either, it at least seems to now be in the same ballpark. But you'd be the person to give the best comparison, and it's been a few years since i demo's the R3 so my memory isn't fully intact. I bought the Tbird because i just like it much more than the R3, tho i DID love that R3 torque. I could have gotten the R3 for what i paid, so the power while important to me isn't as important as all the rest that i prefer. But i'm always comparing everything to the R3 power-wise because that beast is king in that arena. So i look forward to your thoughts on the 1700 Tbird compared to the R3. (just got the 1700 kit installed in my 1600 a week ago in case you hadn't seen the thread I started)

| | Posted : 01 Dec 2010 - 06:59 Post title : Re: I now own it....just don't know where it is (Re: daz) | | | Daz, yeah, I saw the thread and if it is true about the "racing cams" in the BB kit...I wonder if the regular 1700 has the same? I put about 8,500 miles on the R3 Classic, which was pretty good considering how long I've been over here since '08. It was comfortable enough that I was able to go from Key West to my home just north of Pensacola (in Molino...hence my name) in one day...855 miles.
I only had the short test ride in April which is very vague right now...but I do remember (it was the 1600 version) that I was impressed first by the exhaust note, the pick up in speed was definitely no slouch and I came away with a good feeling about it.
But shortly after that I started concentrating on possibly getting a Stallion (Thoroughbred Motor Sports) for myself and my wife to ride around in as I felt she would come out more with me if it wasn't on two wheels. But we had a pretty serious talk about 4 or 5 weeks ago over the phone and she let me know she would just rather drive around in a car and wasn't too much interested in the "in the wind" experience. Free'd up by that knowledge...I let the idea of the Stallion go...,for now, and started concentrating on the idea of getting the Thunderbird and the R3T (since both together cost about what I would have spent on the Stallion).
So the first step is done as I now own an "unseen, unridden" Thunderbird 1700. When I am home in February and pick the 'bird up I will see how my "future" budget looks and decide then whether or not I get the R3T at that time. I am hoping that I may fall into my "old" job at the Triumph dealership in Pensacola again (doesn't pay but $8 or, maybe now, $9 bucks an hour...but I enjoyed it and got to ride a different bike home any night I wanted if I wanted to). Since financially I'll be in pretty good shape by June...I can afford to hold down a job like that which is way less than what I am working over here but has an "enjoyment" quotient that you can't really put a price on so I feel I'll be happy working there. If I do get that job I will definitely go ahead and push ahead with getting the R3T at that time if I haven't already done it.

Yep, riding on the back of motors is not for long haul, but good for sightseeing, per dizwife. So, I've found a solution.
First there was SPAM in a can and now there is Trailer in a Bag. Link 140 lbs, fits in an army duffel bag and my car trunk. Tow, stow, go. If the Lady wants, else, forgetaboutit.
