Strange though as I have not heard of too many later ones failing, just the early models. Was there a manufacturing fault with the early bearings and they changed suppliers who only made 35's. Did they change due to an accountant finding a cheaper bearing? I've seen that before with disastrous results.

Going back to rear hub situation, as discussed previously.
Having identified source of intermittent noise from rear - being the needle bearing in rear hub - I now have a new (4th) hub modified to take 2 ball bearings in place of stock needle, and am waiting for rear tire replacement to install. (Mat's drawing in this thread only applies to first hub version, BTW, but slightly different mod applies to new version.) One advantage to this is replacing inner race with bearings, but mainly hoping to eliminate noise.

Meanwhile, I've learned to ignore it as there seems to be no harm in doing so. Anyone who has done a belt adjustment knows how tedious it is to get belt to center on pulleys; if not correct, the belt will let you know. Mine has not moved either way since last tire change, so either needle bearing isn't a factor or its demise wouldn't affect alignment.
I posted new mod here somewhere, including sound recordings of belt noise and needle bearing noise, if anybody is interested.

Unless I'm the last one here....?

Two things Michael, 1 maybe you need a louder exhaust to distract you from the noise and 2 I have not worried about the belt running centre for a very long time, I just ensure that the wheel runs as in line as possible with the output shaft/pulley and that the belt runs looser than the SM requires. With this set up there is always a small gap between the belt and the rear pulley outer flange.

Thanks, Lee. You're correct, once you get it right the belt does just fine without a whimper. Like you, I give it a little extra slack as factory setting has almost none. But, try as I might, I get it perfect in the shop but it always needs fine tuning after a few miles. Then it's set and forgotten.
The days of loud pipes are over for me, happy with the short tors. Bearing noise is hardly noticeable (have to listen for it), makes me wonder if that needle bearing is even necessary. Still mystified as to why Triumph felt they had to revise first hub - or what was gained.
Next bike will be a self-driving Triumph.

We have self-driving cars, why not a self-driving bike?

I pulled up at a red light in LA once, to my right on the cross street was a bike with a sidecar. Except....
There was no one on the bike, just a guy sitting in the sidecar.
He got a green light and drove off. Apparently controls were in the sidecar. Sure looked weird.
