What can I say Lads? the Thruxton R is more amazing than they have been telling us. I rode it in sports mode (it has road and rain modes too} for about 40 minutes and the thing blew me away with the power. nothing like the older thruxtons, and nothing like the T120 either, which I rode on Friday. Just a whole different animal. The quality of the entire finish is top notch, the stock pipes dont sound too bad with the 270 firing order. The clipons are on 1 and a half inch risers, so the riding position is comfortable enough. what can I say? the thing goes and stops well. The most exciting bike I have ridden. ever, I reckon bloody loved it. I only took it back as it started to rain, and as it wasnt my bike... Dermot

Hmmm....same engine but obvioulsy tuned differently than the T120, maybe cams and general tuning. But it's really that much stronger? Sounds very interesting but i can't stand the cafe or sportbike ergos at all. I wonder if you can get the cams if thats part of it and whatever else and turn a T120 into the same beast.

cams are the same as far as I know,Daz. though they have used lighter bits and pieces in the motor, but dont ask me what. the tuning is completely different, and with the R spec Showa forks,Brembos on the front, and Ohlins on the back, the ride is completely different. not sure if the frames are the same, but both the T120 and the Thruxton feel really rigid and well planted on the road. The T120 is an incredible bike too, with oodles of grunt. and is comfy enough that you could easily tour all day on it. take one for a spin. Dermot.

| Posted : 19 Aug 2016 - 22:16 Post title : Re: first ride Thruxton 1200R (Re: Irish) | | I had my bike in for a new tyre and replace front pads and while I waited took the Thruxton R for a ride. I was able to go for about a 70km ride so got to give it a go. First impressions is that it is smooth and as far as performance will eat a 1700 Bird for breakfast. It has just on 100hp in standard trim and weighs about 100kg less so it does go very well.
Handles like a dream and just falls into corners and powers out. Brakes are sensational and very light to apply. Two finger job but they are Brembos so you don't get much better. It has 3 settings available for throttle application namely economy, rain and power but I could not really tell the difference.
This bike would have to be a second bike for quick blasts as I found it to be uncomfortable. I am about 6'2"tall and felt very cramped plus did not like the feeling that you are sitting over the front wheel as the riding position is head down and knees back but it is a cafe racer and not meant for touring. Obvious by the fact it has no pillion pegs so you won't have a handbrake behind you to slow you down.
I also rode a Bonneville black and again the new 1200 motor is very smooth. The Bonny is like a mini Thunderbird but feels a lot more nimble and I would think it is probably a bit quicker than the birds but doesn't have the torque. Similar riding position to the birds but it just didn't do anything for me.
Both are nice to ride and the Thruxton would be a nice toy to have but is priced at around $23,000 Aus and by the time you put the cafe racer fairing , cam kit and a few other bits on is around $27k and for my money you can get a lot more bang for your bucks bikes at that price. All the new Bonnys are now made in Thailand but quality seems to be high. For the tyre conscious the bikes run wire spoked wheels and have tubed tyres. The new Triumphs actually make the Victory Octane and Indian Scout appear to be good value as they are similar types of retro inspired machines.
Nice to ride but when I got back on my supercharged bird I felt I was on a man's bike and it just confirmed in my mind how much I like my bike with all its mods and customisation.

| Posted : 19 Aug 2016 - 23:18 Post title : Re: first ride Thruxton 1200R (Re: ThunderRat) | | Thats the kind of review i keep hearing. In fact i stopped by my dealer today to see the new triumph showroom they just opened and a salesman was handing over a 1200 bonnie for a demo ride to a kid and i asked him how they compare to the old bonnie. He just said "its twice the bike. I gotta say i just can't shake the desire to own a 1200 speedmaster should they materialize, and even think about the bonnie. But even without the turbo (you have that right?) my Tbird with the way i have it tuned now is so frigging powerful i can't imagine that 1200 is going to compete. Even the thrux i think would have issues passing me because the thing pulls so quickly now it's white knuckle time. But then a 1200 with mods would be a different story. (ECU likely locked tho) One thing that had me salivating like a pitbull in a meat market was the engine. When he turned that thing on i couldn't believe it, tho i have heard this from a few people....NO MECHANICAL NOISE ! Just a sweet exhaust note that wasn't ruined by that bucket of bolts sound that till now all triumph classics and cruisers had. This new gen is awesome. Think about this if you want something to fantasize about.....someone with inside info said the R3 and Tbird will be redesigned from the ground up soon. Imagine if we see that with a 1700 version of the 1200 engine ! Thats would kill me because i can't afford a new bike and likely never will again. So in a way i hope neither happens.
EDIT: Holy shit... Just checked the website and the thrux i see is way up on the bonnie and is right there with the 1700 as torque and HP go !!! Thats fucking crazy ! No wonder it blew yu away. I guess mine wouldn't keep up at all. I have torque lower down, but at a couple hundred pounds heavier it would slay my poor bird.

I would think that even a modified bird with no tors and a decent exhaust would not keep up with the Thruxton R. On a trip you would catch up as the rider would have to stop every hour to stretch out but they are designed as a fun bike not a tourer hence no provision for luggage or a pillion.
I will repeat my earlier comment that they are an expensive bike and in the same price range you have a lot of options from Japan, USA and Europe. They look a million bucks but are priced at a premium.

Two completely different animals, of course. I agree with all that Thunderat says about the performance of the Thruxton R, but I didnt feel cramped at all. but the t120 black that I rode, I really loved. I really did, and it felt like you could ride it all day too. I am thinking that I will end up with one, at some stage.

for some back ground; I have a non stock 2014 thruxton that I use as a commuter. Nice ride, good smooth power, decent handling. Not a sport bike but will very quickly do the ton and then some.
we were close by a state park with excellent roads, twisties and hills. The new thruxton R was absolutely fun, it would totally blow off an older thruxton. I hit the ton in 4th on an up hill grade without even trying. easy wheelies in first and 2nd (not popping the clutch, just cracking the throttle) but not in 3rd. Impressive brakes, it wants to do a stoppy right now, they would take some getting used too.
the handling was not as good compared with my older thruxton but the suspension is not stock and is tuned to suit me. so not really a straight comparison.
the small diameter clip on bars would be a problem for me
I would like one but it would be pretty hard to justify the cost for my expected use of it.
