Back in the day Triumphs were known for their trendy styling and one of the looks that distinguished their models from their competitors was their rubber tank knee pads. I even bought genuine Triumph tank pads for my America and they are available for the current Rocket III's too. But I have never seen a listing anywhere, either genuine or after market for knee pads for the Thunderbirds.
As I do get a bit of superficial paint damage from my knees rubbing on the sides of the tank I would be interested in putting pads on my bike - if I could find some.
Does anyone know of the existence of any such pads?

Cheers
Warren

Do you think they would look correct with rounded tanks? The other bikes have "indentations" for such pads, where our t-birds don't

Thank you for your suggestion Ed. Not quite sure if I like the look or not, but I might order a couple and see if for myself.

Triumph sells a Thunderbird Paint Protection Kit, #A9930332, that includes clear (practically invisible, if you install it right) panels for the sides of the tank where your knees contact it. Costs about $60.

This has nothing to do with styling, in fact it's meant to be "no style".
I don't have one on my '12 Bird, but I did put them on my '98 Bird (both on the top of the tank and on the sides).
They are essentially 3m cling films that are cut to fit the space.
The video makes them look easy to put on, and they actually are. Even the whole Stretching them around a corner is easy as hell. Only mistake I made was getting lazy on the 3rd one I put on and did it too quickly, and now it looks like I'm one of those people who tried to put on their own window tint. ;)
Ok, it's not that bad, but there are a couple of small air holes that I need to re-wet and re-apply.
I talked to the guy and he is willing to design a set up for whatever bike I want (haven't asked about the 2010+ T-Bird yet).
They're cheap, like $15-$20 for a set.

So while they don't have that cool styling, it WILL protect your tank and if put on nicely, can barely tell they're even on.

I've got the rubber pads from an America on mine. They protect the paintwork from my knees and they're not too intrusive.

Ken, how would he shape them? What if wanted a couple just for the sides of the tank (knee pad shape)

I'm not sure to be honest. Email him and ask.
If it turns out he needs to have one there, let me know and I'll take the Bird down there (he's in Escondido, about an hour south of me) and he can measure it.
These things are so "invisible" I would also have him cut one for the front/top of the tank. It would only go 1/3 to halfway up.
I would probably partake as well, if we had them fitted properly.

Have the same problem/concern with jeans rubbing paint work. Spoke to Tech Spec who make aftermarket tank pads for most bikes except the Thunderbird.

A suggestion from Tech Spec is to buy two sheets of high fusion grip and using a template to get the look you want, make your own shape. The high fusion grip is paper thin making it easy to cut and shape. I found them on the net under under tech spec tank pads in Australia and US.

Have two sheets coming to give it a try.
