OK so I just went out to the shed to take the front wheel off to replace the front tyre and realised that I would need a special tool to undo the 19mm hexagonal nut on the axle. Its not really a standard size tool that most of us average backyard mechanics would have.
When you live on the farm in the bush you can't just run down the local tool shop like you city slickers and throw some cash over the counter. You must think outside the square and solve your problem.
OK OK so I've never stepped foot on a farm and live in down town suburbia but hey you can still have a go at making your own tools like this
All I did was grab a 19mm bolt and nut then weld the nut to the bolt and the job was done. Zero expense outlayed which mean for money for beer

I used an old chrome mag wheel nut lying around my shed, same thing basically.

If I ever changed my tyre , which I doubt , I would help the economy and buy the tool.
How big is your farm Dan ?
A quarter acre like mine ?

Unless you are aware though mate, it's when you start the job and then find out you don't have a suitable tool. That's why every shed needs a "shit hot " drawer.

Magpie,

Mate I will still help stimulate the economy. As I said this saving of money can now be re directed to "beer" which will then flow on to the purchase of nurofen and berroca etc....
Mate I don't have one of those mega farms like you, probably 1/8 acre. You'd probably even have grass to mow on a patch that big

Done exactly the same thing the first time I removed the front wheel I'm 30km out of town no other easy options , you can usually find a solution around the farm amongst all the crap lying around. As long as you get the job done happy days.

Or use the wrong tool like i did....a spark plug socket of the correct size with a extention put in from the wrong side works too.

not in this case ! I've been using this for years and not once has it not worked perfect. But i do know what you mean and in most cases i too go out and get the proper on. Usually saves a lot of headaches. But the spark plug "axl tool" works great for me.

But then dont Ya need a lump of Hex Bar to stick in the Spark Plug Socket

The "Back Yard Fix" like originally depicted by Dan is the best to get Ya out of trouble provided you can find the right size bolt & nut. But then as Dave says get the "Proper Tool".

otherwise you end up carrying around a heap of rusty bits of home made tools when you go travelling I know I dont as generally the correct tools also take up the least space and store correctly.

Just like Mat1600 advice to me on how to store the Axel alignment tool when travelling, "Stick it in the rear axle and put a lock nut on it" Brilliant

I've done just that, sticking the axle alignment tool in the rear axle, only I didn't put a lock nut on it.And the reason, because I was too fuckin stupid and "FORGOT" to remove it after I was done with it.DUH!! Not to mention that I probably traveled 500 or 600 miles before I discovered my short coming. Double DUH!! And the strange part is,the wing nut never fell off. And I've done this a couple times now. Triple DUH!! Hitting: Just lucky I guess! Dave!!!

The Storage idea for when going on long rides came from Matt. AFTER I LOST MY FIRST ONE Which I can only presume came from the exact same situation that you expalined above. As I turned my whole shed upside down and inside out and emptied every nook and cranny that could hide that bloody alignment tool . So you were luckier that me.

I must be one of those things that happen when we get to the "Mature Age Eh"

Gerry I think the half inch extension bar goes in from the other end.

Lee . Mate you are seriously "Having a Grey Moment" or am I missing something

I know I am getting a bit beyond it but I do know how to change a spark plug.

Think about it. The Hex end of the Plug Spanner goes in the Female Hex ( RHS as depicted in Dans original post) of the Front Axel to stop it turning while you undo the Captive Nut on the other end ( LHS)"

I think you still need a lump of Hex or a extremely long 1/2 drive to go up inside the plug spanner. Thus why wouldn't you just get the right 1/2 Hex drive or a lump of hex bar of the correct size.

There is no retaining nut on the other end. The front spindle is captive.

You are correct Mat, I was thinking of the retaining nut on My previous America & Speedy.

I have modified (read, drill the fcker out) spark plug sockets so the 1/2" square goes all the way through, so you can put an extension bar into either end, so if you put it in from the reverse end (sp side) you can use the large hex as the fork tool.

Harbor freight carries an adapter that has 4 sizes on 2 ends. You did spend a penny or so on that weld.
