It reminds me of an old HD joke:
This Alaskan guy takes his Harley into the dealer for some work. The mechanic says it will be an hour or so before he'll be able to tell him what's wrong. The guys says that's ok; it's a nice day out and he'll go for a walk. On the way back, because it's really hot out, he stops and buys an ice cream cone. As he's walking, it's melting really fast, so some of it dribbles onto the front of his shirt. He finally makes it back to the dealership and goes to talk to the mechanic. He finds him and says, "Ok, what's the problem?" The mechanic looks at him and says, "Looks like you've blown a seal." The guy looks down at his shirt and says, "No, no, that's just ice cream."
Around here I would guess 99.5% of HD riders all look a like and do not drink latte's but beer. Just look on any Sunday and you see the bars packed with parked HD's but in the far places to ride you see the real riders who rode 100 miles to get there and eat lunch and ride home sober.
Spending 19K on a Fatboy is insane but I guess you could do the same on a Thunderbird 2100 custom supercharged with a 360 rear tire you can do many insane things and that's just the answer. Some folks are just plain nuts.
But so are the "riders" who's sole intent is dyno runs. To each his own.

Yeah your right most are beer drinkers, nothing wrong with that don't mind a drink myself, but the point I was feebly trying to make was that their rides are very short with stopping , often reving the very loud bike to announce their arrival then almost posing next or near their bikes as if to say look at me & what I've got & finally riding off on their long journey home to their shed usually no more than a few miles to park & lock up the bike where it spends 99% of its life. How's that for a generalization, obviously not always true but but true far more often with that brand of cycle rider than any others.

Yeah, he was just saying MOST or a LOT of them are that way. You may not have been, but there are exceptions to every rule. On the other side of the coin, i literally have never seen or known anyone who rides anything but a HD that does mostly short bar runs ! It's truly unique to them, as are doo rags and leather vests and that whole clown costume. It's all about image for them. If it weren't, many or most of them would be riding something else.

So many riders-not just HD owners but all types of Cruisers just have bikes as a fashion accessory. It's more about the bike than the riding. Amazing how some riders won't wear full face helmets because it don't fit the "image". For anyone with half a brain the antiquated Harley engine is a piece of crap. Only the newer 6 speed motors are worth a darn as that Victory video very plainly showed.
I was so tempted to say to one idiot enjoy your fried stator but kept my mouth shut-the day the Softail died.......sorry if I told it before but here it is.
My buddy Norm (BMW LT) my wife (Suzuki VS800) and I (Tbird) walk into a bar-Conchy Joe's in Jensen Beach-as were walking in a guy at the bar in a leather vest and a skull do-wrap says right to me that I have a lot of nerve parking those piece of shit rice burners next to their Harleys. I just smiled and moved on. The banter continued as we walked past about 'merican built bikes and other stuff about us being wimps and did we want to do anything about it? A shit faced asshole asking for a fight. Luckily Norman did not hear them or we would have had problems.
We ate lunch and left right in front of the 2 guys on HD's. One was an older Softtail and a brand new FLHX. We go about a block and are going to turn left but there is a lot of traffic on Indian River Drive. Loud pipes are heard as the impaitend HD's are going to try to pass us while were turning left so I signaled our group to hold tight and we pull over toward the edge to let them by.
Much loud revving of the 2 bikes and the Soft tail pops the clutch then rolls slowly past us. No amout of throttle would help him as Norman walks back and grabs the broken belt off the road and walks up and say's you looking for this.
Karma catchs up no matter how fast you ride.

I did say it was a generalization & not always true, but I stand by my comment that it occurs much much more often with the image conscious Harley brigade. Most of my friends ride bikes & four of them are Harley owners & they also just happen to fall into that category.

So, why HD manage to keep selling yesterday technology at tomorrow prices in such a big numbers? I think it's because HD sells you more than just the bike. HD sells you a bike + an attitude or personality. In fact, I think they sells you the attitude and the bike comes free. At least here in Spain, so many HD owners are individuals who due the the lack of "soul" or because they are suffering the middle age depression they end up buying a HD plus all the pirate fashion thing and, suddenly, they become the macho man of the block. So, for me, HD's are just a quite expensiv e prozac. To each his own,

So out came the HDers. Got parked amongst a local 'Chapter' and sat and watched. Can't believe how anal these 'chapters' get. Their 'army like' badge collection on a tatty denim over perfect HD leathers, are a great source of amusement. 'Chapter CEO', 'Club DJ', 'Ride Leader', 'Safety rider', 'Event organiser', 'Chief wanker',.......... and they love it. Its not for me, but these guys really need to stand back a take a good look at themselves, especially the ones that talk in a very upper class tongue.
But...... good luck to them if that's their escape.

(Re: mat1600) | | | It's probably been said before, but what amazes me the most of all these stories is how the elitist crap isn't just in the U.S.A. The ire Harley riders hold toward other brands is because they (falsely) believe nothing else is as American as a Harley. "America is number one, all others are number two or lower...etc, etc." To hear that they look down upon other bikers in other countries as well, that's just sad, because it doesn't even remotely make sense as to why. I mean, do they want to be dirty, fat Americans? Marketing is a powerful thing...
