I've tried to find a concise write up on the process - or even YouTube - but haven't found a good one.

As a NOOB with drive belts I'm not clear on the process. My old BMW was shaft drive and needed nothing more than a fluid change.

Do you need to have the rear wheel off the ground to adjust? What's the process of axel nut / adjuster nuts / torque specs / etc. I know you guys have done this a few times - can someone please offer a 10 step (or how many necessary) process?

Hi-I can sympathize with you about belts vs shafts. I now own 2 belt drive bikes for the first time.

I'm no expert but I do have a copy of the Triumph Service Manual and it's spelled out in there the procedure.

The stock wheel adjusters are not easy to adjust but a forum member here Matt1600 made up a batch and was selling them to other forum members. I have a set but so far my tires are still new looking at 7000 miles. I was ready to replace the rubber at 5000 miles?

There is a tension gauge that's used to measure the deflection. I got mine from Fast Eddy Sports.

You basically just want to make sure you have proper tension and if not you loosen the Axel nut-27mm socket for this. My long time rider friends just tell me that you want to twist the belt 45 degrees and if it's firm there your fine. I used this method with my Vulcan 900 for a few years. Worked great for me so far. But with the Thunderbird there seemed to be more presicion required or it squeaks. I started to squeak but a quick check of the tension showed it was fine and I just shot some food grade silicone spray in the pulley and it's quiet as a church mouse now.

The manual says you can adjust either on side stand or lifted up.

Picking up the bike is a whole other topic but I put a 9" x 14" x1/2" marine plywood with a rubber mat glued to it under the sump and lift with a motorcycle jack. The bike is resting on the sump and is really unbalanced so you need good luck or better still a helper to hold it from falling until you can block it securely.

"Drive belt tension is measured by applying a 4.5kg-force (10 pound-force) to the belt load to the plunger of service tool T3880126 (or the Fast Eddy one, or a lb. pound bag of lead) The belt deflection is measured on the tool.

On sidestand-.2 to .27 in 5.5 to 7mm
On Support - .3 to .35 in 7.5 to 9mm

You then will loosen the lock nut on the end of the threaded rod that sticks out in back of the adjuster.

move the inner nut to mode the adjuster in or out and then measure. There are marks to show where you started from on top of the adjuster on the frame.

It's not real hard to do.

And no rear shaft seals to wear out.

This thread is really what you should read next:

It's actiually located right under this thread but got real long so I thought I would just write and say hello and answer a few of your questions.

Check your PM as I sent you one.

Good luck with the new bike. I something feel like I'm riding my old R90/6 Airhead as to me the bird handles and feels a lot like it.

Dave - you mean, go to Massachusetts?

Actually that would be great. It's just a matter of timing, as the Mrs is keen to keep me busy these days.
