Help T Birders please . I went to remove my front wheel this afternoon and the right hand wheel spacer is binding on the shaft. As I screw the shaft out the spacer comes with it putting pressure on the right hand fork. I've tried to get some lubricant in and work it free which has worked to some extent . Anybody got any ideas ?

See if you can tie the two fork legs together and carefully drift the spindle out. Leave it to soak a while before you do it.

Hint - when you come to replace it , turn it round as there will be a groove in it caused by the seal. Turning it round will give you a fresh surface for the seal to run on. If you have ABS then the left spacer will be thinner than the right hand side.

That is, of course, if it is the ali spacers you are talking about.

Whan you get it off, give it a bit of a working with emery cloth in the bore of the spacer to free it up for replacement.

Thanks Mat1600 I havent been able to wind the spindle out beyond the threads on the left hand side . I'm worried it will put too much streets on the forks . The spacer is acting like a collar which is just forcing the forks.

Ok - so you havn't managed to unscrew it yet. I see your problem. I would unscrew a little bit and re-tighten the two cap scews in the fork leg. Then with some big grips, see if you can work it loose - spraying plenty of releasant in.

Somethin is definitely wrong here. Those collars should fall off not bind to the X.Could it be that the two collars are reversed, left side on right and visa versa??? Got any pics of it that you could post??? Dave!!!

Spray a good dose of WD40 all around the spacer and let it penetrate then try again to free the spacer. Weird....

Thanks everyone for your responses . Problem has now been overcome. Long story short had to take the forks out of the bike ,lay the whole assembly on its side on sheepskin. I had blocks of wood supporting the edge of the wheel . Then a block of wood on the outside of the right fork and tap tap tap with the persuader until I had driven the spacer right to the end of the axle. Spoke to the bloke at the tyre place and he said it is a very common problem on all types of bikes. I've cleaned up the spacer with some emery paper reassembled the bike using plenty of waterproof grease on the axle and she's ready to roll.these aluminum spacers are an almost perfect fit on the axle if they get dry they can freeze on and then you are in deep doo doo . Thanks again everyone hope this may help someone else avoid this Problem

Quick question regarding that stuck collar:When ya finally got it off the axle, did ya notice any corrosion between the two pieces???I have never run into this problem and I've lost count of how many different machines I've played with over the years.Dave!!!

No Dave no corrosion that I could see . I think because these spacers are such a perfect fit it doesn't take much to get them to freeze on .

Mate you were obviously holding your mouth wrong, and when doing front end stuff you have to stick your tongue out the left side of your gob or things just don't go right.

You can thank me later for this.

Everytime I pull a wheel or whatever it is that I'm workin on,that "whatever" always,ALWAYS, gets cleaned, dressed if needed, and greased, whether it be axle grease, die elctric grease or never seize.By following that simple rule of thumb, the next guy that works on it,which could very well be you, will be a lot happier if everything comes apart easy instead of fighting with it because of rust, corrosion,or incompetence on the part of the stealer, mechanic,or owner. This thread is a CLASSIC EXAMPLE of that because someone didn't do what they were supposed to do and it caused grief for this gentleman.Dave!!!

Dave I think it was me that didn't grease that spacer properly for the last tyre. But I tell you what I'll never make that mistake again , what a pain.the other mistake I made was the one Leethal pointed out.I had my tounge out of the wrong side of my mouth

Speaking of tyres Andrew, what have you been using and how are they performing?

G'day Lee hope you are well. I have just put new tyres on I had Bridgestone exedra max on the front Dunlop 407 d on the back 200 55 17 . Now have bridgestone exedras both ends back tyre is 200 50 . It is riding and steering beautifully. A couple of weeks ago the steering was feeling crappy following grooves in the road ,so I adjusted the steering head bearings . What a difference so much more stable something to keep an eye on for sure.
