Help Wanted

Calling all Californians and .... Nevadians ?

I'm flying over to SF on friday 13th with a mate to have a drive about and do some sight seeing,.. we're hiring a car and a rough draft plan was to go east from SF through Yosemite to Lee Vining / Mammoth Lakes, south to Beatty and spend a few days in Vegas over to LA and back up the coast through Big Sur to SF again.

BUT , ... apparently we can't cross through Yosemite on the 120 because it isn't open yet !

Can anyone advise on a/any better/alternative route so that we can do a circular tour ?

All sensible suggestions very welcome.

PS

We want to find a shooting range to have a go with hand guns, they are illegal in this country.

Thanks

John

Check with caltrans for road conditions over the mountain passes, there are several, you may have to go Hwy 50 or even Hwy 80 to get on the east side of the Sierra's. We are experiencing some late spring storms that are dumping more snow. The best route to Lost Wages from Central California south to Hwy 58 and then to Hwy 15. Good luck.

You can go up 50 and cut east before South Lake Tahoe. Then pick up 395 south through Mammoth, come back west at
Fresno.

Thanks guys, so you think that the 50 or the 80 should be ok weatherwise ? .. the plan is to pick up the car on sunday around middday and head out east.

If the 50 or the 80 is do-able is it still a bit dogdy or would it be kept quite clear ?

What is caltrans and how do I check it, .. I assume it is some sort of transportation weather service ?

Link this is California Department of Transportation (road conditions), if you map your route of choice than make note of the road/highway numbers, you can then go to this site and type in the number for conditions.

Hwy120 over Tioga Pass in Yosemite will most likely be closed through most of May. If you want to see Yosemite you can go into it via 120 then drop down to 140, see the Yosemite Valley and then go out 41 to Fresno. Then take 99 to Bakersfield, pick up 58 east to Barstow, pickup 15 to Las Vegas.

Vegas has shooting ranges where you can rent anything up to and including machine guns. Bring dollars because that's close to what they will charge you for each bullet. Machine guns get expensive at that rate. If you want to shoot one I recommend a Thompson because the rate of fire is fairly slow, so it will cost less. I believe Arizona cities have such places also. Just look up gun stores in the Yellow Pages of the phone directory.

Happy hunting!

You will have a good trip and LV does have a few gun ranges. Love an old Willy and Ethel cartoon, sign in gun store, "Buy One get everything else for free"

Don't forget Solvange. Plenty of shooting and open ranges throughout California and Nevada.!
