On a side note the actual adjustment was fine no real problems I just stuff a micro fibre cloth between spanner and chrome.

Thanks for the info and thanks to everyone on this thread who has offered their advice. I have now successfully adjusted the rear suspension. I slipped a piece of garden hosepipe over the C spanner to protect the chrome and was able to shift the damper hub round. It took some effort and each turn was a hard clunk as it jumped the slots. Hope thats normal!
Its on setting 1 and on my test ride it is much better than before on 5. I have not found it too unstable or soft but will also experiment with it on setting 2 to see if that feels any better. Although my other half doesn't weigh much I suppose I will be cranking back up towards 3 or 4 to compensate for the extra person and probably weight in the panniers.
Cheers

If you are a bigger person, you ratchet up the setting from their. I've settled at 3 and the ride in soft enough, but I don't bottom out.

Don't you know Britain has the highest rate of obesety in Europe and the women are ahead of the blokes, won't be long before we overtake the Americans as the fat bastard champions. Triumph will be bringing out a spring that goes to 6 soon.
