I have a few people I'd like contracts taken out on.
Do you have a valid passport? Would you mind flying to Aus. I'll show you where Tamworth and Goulbourn are on the maps.

P.S. I hope a genuine contact comes along for you soon.

I like the logbook idea. It reminds me of a "trackable" in geocaching. One of the things I love about this forum, is how truly international it is. Perhaps we could also log gps coordinates with the log, or here on the forum, and keep track of how miles it racks up. It would be interesting to see the path the log takes.

Thatch, I think a scavenger hunt thread sounds great. My girlfriend got me into geocaching, and she also does photo scavenger hunts as well. At least I could do a hunt that has a subject I enjoy, like my bird. I took a picture of this rather large rabbit for her just last weekend. I think it would have looked much more interesting with my tbird parked beneath it.

I like the literal meaning of the baton but there is something to be said for a log book as it becomes more weathered, personal and 'connected' as we go. BUT ultimately I think anything we do will end up having it's own sort of charm regardless and I'm by no means of a single mind on this.

On the issue of accompanying book, I don't know if 2 things are redundant or cool ... probably could argue either side of that one. To that end though here is a pic of the inside of the book cover I was talking about..

It's got a nice place for a badge or what not, if we wanted a book and a 'thing' and wanted to keep it still transportable. Of course the pocket could also be for a sticker, patch or some other thing that might be a 'gift' for the next journal keeper.... say I go to the Stelvio pass, take a pic, write my info on the journal and pick up a patch and slip it into the book and send it on. Next guy get's the book, keeps the patch and takes his own pic and momento...

I don't know, still just throwing out ideas.

Perhaps we should start another Forum Topic for the Photo Challenge.

Yup, will do.

ok flockers....

heres the linear design for perusal

the cut version will have engraved lines and sections that can be colour filled (eg lettering) and colour inserts (eg dart)

what size do you feel appropriate?
at present its 160mm length 110mm height any larger could be too cumbersome.

i dont want to get into colour choice though as we will never agree.
i could maybe try to include black, silver, blue, red, white somewhere? - maybe an alu back ( would need polishing now and again lol)

the only addition maybe could be a linear globe above the darts nose???

I am happy to follow the flock regarding the log book.

I think the leather bound book with art work and space for the disc is probably a good idea. Gives us something to write in and something else to photograph.

I'd would like to suggest that wherever possible the Rally Relay is used as an incentive to organise Flockings. Social intercourse opportunities for forum members, rather than a record of an individuals scenic day out. The Flockings don't need to be huge or over multiple days.

I guess that will be up to the person who has the book and what they are willing and able to organise at the time.

Thatch, did you make up the leather binding for the pictured book? I and I'm sure others would be willing to contribute towards the cost of the book binding and the enclosed disc. e.t.c.

Of course then we'd have to decide on where it starts and who gets to write in the book first. My vote would be for BNZ? as he started the thread with his idea and also lives pretty well up in the north east extremity of the U.S.

If possible, I think we should start pretty soon to take advantage of the approaching northern riding season.

Regards Frank

That looks great Zolti. Well Done. I agree on the colours, we'd never get concensus.

As to the dimentions, I guess we need to consider how to fit it into a good book binding.

Rob, that looks great. I think it is all that is needed.

As Frank was saying - where to start the book and relay. My suggestions are
1. The thread originator
2. the closest person to Hinkley
3. a PM vote to someone sensible - yeh yeh I know, thats gunna be a hard call.
4. Bedoin or Boomer
5. the first member (and present contributor)

I'm happy to take the first US leg if the baton goes west to east. Currently planning a trip from San Francisco to Pennsylvania starting in late June. Starting line is the Golden Gate Bridge so not a bad first photo op.

OK... VERY late to this thread! Been sleeping

What do I think?
I agree to everything!

Actually - When back reading I came up with some ideas myself. Such as a Swiss ex-military ~ lovely thick leather ~ map holder/pouch!
I usually carry a 'log/drawing book' in there. It may hold both the batton and a book!?
Here a picture I found on the tinterweb:

I'll photograph it this evening in my hands so you get an idea of its size.
If it good and you decide to use this idea - I'll get another 3 pouches (my contribution) and forward them onto you Zolti!?

Regarding the GOOGLE MAP - I can set-up some maps - maybe give the organizer and one or two more the log-in details so it remains up-to-date.

Leave the pork pies for now - get the sausage rolls while they're hot!

Zolti

How soon could you make up three discs?

I don't wish to put undue pressure on someone who has voluntered but I wonder could you have one done for the Peak District Flocking, another for the Tumbarumba Flocking and one available before Kevin starts his epic ride from the west to east coast of the US. (Not sure when that is?)

If we have one for each geographic area we could leave it up to the first people in each area to come up with an appropriate book and packaging? I like both Thatchs' leather cover and Birdys' map case, no doubt we could take weeks to decide.

I also like the idea of the three plaques/books. I might make it my ambition to get my name in all three.

If we can get these organised at such short notice, I'm sure there will be no shortage of volunteers to take the first deliveries.

If this isn't practical or convenient we can always start the relays at a later date.

Frank

What he said +++ The only thing I would add is that we should try to make sure that each of the plaques gets to cross to the "other shores" so that is does stay a real international thing.

Frank you could take the Aussie one to England on your trip (after the Tumbarumba Flocking blokes have signed it) and bring the UK one back here for a run... etc

Cheers, Max

My brother made me a journal for my birthday a while back. It measures roughly 6" X 8'. The cover is leather and you can buy refills at Borders.

Not in Aussie you can't, I understand they went bust (Borders that is).

The journal looks good by the way - you have just generated a thought for me; I should really do something about recording my rides, at least the more interesting ones, thanks for that...

Sorry. You are correct. Borders is bust here in the states too. I meant to say Barnes and Noble.

At any rate, if a journal like this is what everyone agrees we're looking for, I could order one from him.
He can make just about any design we want if someone wants to submit something different.

I think he gets about $75. All hand stitched. The pictures don't really do it justice.

Heck. I'll pay for it and it will be my donation to the effort.

This is a picture of the journal I started out four years ago for BA.com
[image]

Here's the very first hand off in south eastern Michigan.

The journal has now been to all four corners of the USA with only one restart, the journal haveing been returnd to me by mail because a none careing member could'nt be bothered to finde a way to move it along after his bike was recked. It must be strest that if your willing to take the hand off you must keep it moveing and not hold it for a long time, except for the winter months of course.
