| | Posted : 23 Feb 2012 - 10:11 Post title : Rear luggage rack - Suggestions or Measurements (Harley ) | | | So, I'm looking for a rear luggage rack for my bike. I could settle for the round rack from Triumph BUT, I'd really like to span the rear fender and not have anything bolted into the fender. I'd also like the idea of having the legs on the side of the fender to protect my fresh paint along the sides as well. Since Triumph doesn't make such a thing (they do for the Rocket tourer) and 'universal' doesn't seem to apply to luggage racks. try as I might I can't seem to find the perfect solution. I'm up for suggestions if you all have them though.
However, even if I can't find a universal solution, the plethora of Harley parts might mean the right rack does exist for them. So, baring some overlooked solution, my question is, does anyone have one or know the measurements (perhaps from easy bracket shopping) on various Harleys that might make it possible for me to find a rack that will fit the bird.
I'm looking at racks like these....
Quick detachable would be a nice feature but not required, but the aforementioned features are what I'm looking for. I realize it's not only bolt distance that needs to work, but also fender height, but if I can at least get closer to knowing what might work that would help.
Thanks

The bottom picture is a luggage rack for the Sportster. The measurements for the attachment points are side-to-side ~11.25" and the front-to-back ~7.5". The height is ~6" from the top of the rack to the center of the attachment. Looking at it positioned on my bird, it looks to be 1" too narrow and doesn't align well front-to-back with any of the attachments. It is plenty high enough and you could possibly bend it to fit the width but the front-to-back distance for the attachments would be the major problem.

It was a long shot but I've not found any universal over the fender racks like this. There might be one in the HD line that works but as the measurements aren't listed anywhere it's near impossible to know. At least I can scratch off the sportster model.
Thanks again

I was looking at that, and thinking of trying to "extend" that bracket arrangement to include a flat, CNC'd rack with sheet stock. Basically all one piece, just bent for the rack portion. I don't have any CAD tools, etc., but was gonna sketch something up, including either the Storm logo, with a T-bird option (maybe the T-bird "dart" logo) to get cut into the rack. Material and finish could be whatever you want, just the initial CNC set up cost, once it was in a CAD format.
Jamie
EDIT - it'd be set up to be either a rack only, or include provisions for aftermarket sissy bar.

I did the drawings for my quick release backrest. You can have what I have if you want them.

As mentioned, I don't have CAD access, yet, but once I get the scaled dwg together (I is an engineer, so have scales, straightedges, etc.) I can get a few estimates. I do have a local machine shop with CNC, that I was gonna run this by to see if they're interested in making a prototype, and maybe a few runs if interested.
For Thatch, I'll shoot you a PM once I have the sketch of what I'm thinking. Might suit your needs if you got a metal shop nearby.

I have no interest in a backrest at all so the ability to do one or the other would be great. I'm mainly looking for a way to do a big throw over bag and protect my paint without mounting anything to the fender itself. For me the plainer it is the better simply because it will only be a functional piece and not on the bike if a bag isn't loaded.
I'll be real interested to see how you progress on this.

Have a look at my picks and see if it woul dlook ok for you , then I could re-draw it for a rack.

For me personally I'm looking for an over the fender, not behind the fender, to hold the position where the pillion would be. I'm sure that will work for some folks though. (bit dear for a rack though)

| | Posted : 01 Mar 2012 - 23:20 Post title : Re: Rear luggage rack - Suggestions or Measurements (Harley ) (Re: Thatch) | | | Thatch - that's exactly what got me thinking about it. I put an over-fender bag (no rack) on for my Oct rally. When I got home I noticed the tunnel-bag scuffed the side of the rear fender on each side, just above the fender rail. I'll get a crude hand-sketch together this weekend (try to make it to scale, etc.). Since my girlfriend rides pillion sometimes, I want to think about "receivers" for an aftermarket or OEM sissy bar. But all will be quick release. I'm shooting to have 2 configs - one for solo and one for pillion. The solo option would be able to still use "receivers" to accept an aftermarket sissybar...but shift it to support the rider. I'm hoping I can make it interchangeable with either Easy or Edge saddlebag brackets, which I think Mat1600 did with his setup - IE having machined "studs" (like Matt's) for the rack, and the pannier brackets. Might sound like a stretch, but think I have ways for all of this to work out in 2 configurations.
Mat1600 - I'll sift through your posts, and see if I can get enough dimensions, etc., for short-term concepts, etc. If I can get it worked out, then I'll hit you up for CAD file. Thanks, in advance.
Jamie
EDIT - Mat....once I get the concept and dimensions down, maybe you could get in on the design and drafting??????
