Hi Folks,

Back from a long hiatus and glad to see the forum is as lively as ever. :)

One question: Has anyone disabled (or know how to) the really annoying orange "low fuel" light?

Cheers,
Gonzo

Try adding fuel. I do that and the light goes out. Works every time. And as annoying as the orange light is, I find it to be somewhat less annoying than having to walk home!

Yes, yes... All very funny... :)

But fact is that I watch my fuel gauge carefully, and even when the last bar dissappears, I can still go for another 100Kms before the bird runs out. (Although I've never actually run out on the bird - just needed to put in close to the max litres.)

So, with the orange light coming on when you are down to 4 bars (which is about 100Kms from no bars) and 100Kms left after no bars... The damn annoying orange light is on for half a bloody tank!

So, I'll ask again, for anyone that is mildly technical or adventurous...

Is it possible to PERMANENTLY disable the annoying orange "low" fuel fuel light?

(You guys are just so damn funny. :) )

So far I have had no need to take the speedo asembly off, so don't know if it's a sealed unit, runs led's or bulbs. Is it simply a matter of unplugging the offending orange light? Or sticking a piece of insulation tape on the glass

Just so you know Gonzo, I spotted your post early and was about to make a smart arsed comment, but restrained myself. If the comment had have been made by a Pom, well, say no more.

I will take a look at the spedo assembly when I assemble the tank.

It will be interesting to hear what is found when the speedo is inspected. Most of the ones I've modified (Japanese) are printed circuit with surface mount LED's for idiot lights and night illumination. The tank gauge and idiot light are driven from the tank sensor voltage levels feeding an IC who's logic triggers the bar graph changes and subsequent idiot LED at a predetermined set point. I like to replace the speedo illumination LED's to change the night-time face color among other things.

No, it is one piece. Also, if it could be adjusted the fuel gauge would read full when it was not.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Just put a piece of black tape over the offending orange fuel low light. I like to leave that sucker on, myself. Good to have an idea how much fuel is left. I drive all the way down to zero now and then fuel up, UNLESS I am on the road. Then, I fill the tank a bit more often. NOT fun to push an 812 pound (369 kg) machine very far, any day, any time.

Just alittle FYI for you guys who like to run the fuel gauge down to "E" for enough. And this applies to all fuel injected vehicles.Like a boat turning on the water,ya hear that motor cavitating. The exact same thing happens with the fuel pump in the gas tank if ya run it too low.And ya know what happens next??? The fuel pump is junk. You may get away with it a couple times, but sooner or later,it will catch up with ya.So what I'm sayin is,it's not a good idea to run the fuel down too much or you'll be walkin, and later buyin a new pump.Nuff said?? Dave!!!

OK, but can the speedo be opened to put some tape over the light? Not going to ride around with some electrical tape stuck to the outside! :)

If we didn't have a fuel gauge that is always there, showing how many bars of fuel you have, then I'd be fine with the stupid orange light. But since the bar graph is there and I can plainly see when it is at 4 bars or less... Really, that bright orange light while riding at night is damn annoying.

And when you have an attention span of a goldfish, every 5 minutes or so you startle yourself when you see a bright orange light on your dash and think "Crap! Engine light? ... No, stupid fuel light. *sigh*"

Gonz,

The light/gauge face and circuit board are fastened together. I will put pictures up tonight when I get home. You will not be able to "unplug" the low fuel light.

MAX FUEL:

Ok folks, I filled my tank from being dead empty and air dried to the splash guard using a liquid measuring device for accuracy, and yes the bike was on its side stand. The tank will hold exactly 24 US quarts (6 gallons). So the advertised 5.8 might be usable amount but I would hazard to guess that 5.6 would be reasonable as a usable amount. Yay, the question is finally answered...

That's right, whenever I'm in London, not so much lately, alas, I always get taken out for curry. Some of the best of Empire's cuisine.
And the chutney, too hot to eat but too sweet to resist. Earthing food.
