As some of you will recall I had a 2010 Tbird factory 1700 black, not an SE. This is a rare bird.

Myself or the dealer could never sort out the idle and ridiculous popping. This was the reason I struggled every time I tried a new Tune. Triumph field tech looked at the bike and had no answers. Everything was in spec, replaced Air temp sensor, Engine temp sensor, TPS. Several tunes etc. It's my opinion the stepper motor is an issue, but it is spot on, so who knows.
I'm not one to give up easily and I didn't. Spent most of a year trying to sort things out, more time worrying and thinking than I was riding.

So Wednesday I traded for a new 2014 Commander, and right now I'm one happy camper.

I have several Nice goodies I'll be listing in the classifieds for the 2010-14 Tbirds.

I'll do a ride report in another thread.

Nice, hope it works out for ya. I'm wondering tho....unless you are leaving the tuning and exhaust stock, how do you know it won't pop too once modded/tuned? And if you DO leave it stock, why did you not set the old one back to stock which would rid the popping? Actually, they all pop even stock but with stock pipes you don't hear it. I remember when mine was stock i never heard popping except when riding next to this wall on my street that reflected back the engine sound real noticably, and i could hear the popping but it doesn't sound like popping so i wasn't sure what it was. Then when i got tors i found out. Anyways, the commander is a great variation, good luck with her.

Wow, not sure how your post ended up in my original post at the top, take a look..... but to answer your questions. We did put it back to stock. Everything but the pipes, D & D. The main issue was idling dropping to 740-820-850--790. It would not fast idle when cold. etc.
Nothing would cure that problem.
The popping was something I could have corrected somewhat with the proper tuning but the idle problem gave every new tune I/we tried fits. I'm sure that's way the tunes you did for me never worked. Something in the way the fuel was being delivered was just Fd up. I guess

The 2014 Commander has the locked ECU so...................I just be riding it , not fn with it and worrying with it.

My scooter is BONE STOCK,yet I had similar problems to yours with it not fast idling when cold, occassionally stalling hot or cold, and poor idle after she she got up to operating temperature. And these problems were intermittent, which is the worst case senerio. So I put my thinkin cap on and came up with a possible solution which was the "AIR TEMP SENSOR" located on the top, left side of the air box.So I gambled.I bought one, changed it,did the 12 minute adaption procedure to get it acclimated into the system, and WOLA!! Problem solved!!!

From my original post "REPLACED Air temp sensor, Engine temp sensor, TPS."

I also replaced everything in the tank, pump, filter, regulator, hoses, gaskets. It was just one of those.
As I mentioned earlier. I don't give up easy and spent a year trying to sort things out. I was just burnt out with the issues.

Sure hope the dealer crushes your old bike so nobody else winds up with it. Don't need anymore pissed off Triumph owners than we already have.

The dealer was aware of the issues, actually one of the tech's seemed pretty interested in the bike.
Best of luck to the new owner, hopefully they have better luck sorting it out than me. I did everything I could possible think of to resolve the problems. I could have sold it to a private party but I felt better about trading to the dealer that knows the history.

If I had kept it the one thing I would have replaced was the stepper motor. It checked out fine every time it was tested but research shows they can be difficult to sort. I still suspected I was just over throwing money at it for parts that showed to be in spec.

The R3 owners have several steppers go bad.

Anything can be fixed as long as the individual working on it understands what makes it tick. The problem is,there are very few guys in this business who know what they're doing. The stealers don't wanna pay a fair wage for a GOOD TECH,so they hire some hack who "THINKS" he,or she,is a technician, but they're really not.And it doesn't have to be an individual who specifically works on motorcycles and only motorcycles.A good tech,or mechanic,is a person who can work on ANYTHING and be successful because they know and understand the basics,as the principles are the same on all motor vehicles. The components may be alittle different in shape or size, but they still perform the same functions.

Case in point: If ya brought your machine to the right person,an experienced person who can figure things out and knows what they're doing, that person could fix it and you'd still be driving it today.

You won't regret your decision. I can promise you that. I too bought a 2014 Commander. I have a little over 2400 miles since I bought her in late August. I don't think I've ever been so impressed and in love with any vehicle in the past. The handling, the performance and the comfort. It's like having the comfort of a Cadillac with the performance of a Corvette. I couldn't be happier.

Both the LT and the Commander are getting great reports from anyone that has one both models have grown on me over time, and I particularly love the Commander. I will take one for a spin one of these days, just to see what all the excitement is about.

i'm actually really surprised you stayed loyal to Triumph. If I had to go through all of the headaches you went through, and for the amount of time you had to endure (a year plus) I probably would have considered another make. Obviously glad you stayed with Triumph. It speaks volumes on brand loyalty and your optimism on other models. I have less than one month on my new, leftover, 2014 t-bird ABS and I already have it in for a stepper motor replacement. Same idling issue that has been reported in many other posts. I honestly hope I do not go through what you did. I just may not be "strong enough" to stay and consider another model. Good luck on your new purchase. And don't forget to wish me luck on mine. cheers.

Hey DRod,
Yes I am a loyal individual in general. I'm also loyal to the Triumph brand as I've owned several over the years.
They can be a quirky lot but usually once you know what to expect you're good. I looked around but there's nothing out there that get's my blood pumping like a Trumpet.

I looked at the CB1100, Why it's underpowered and boring. Jut get a Bonneville
Looked at a Valkyrie, ugly as shit, poor MPG and expensive
Indian, the Chiefs Look great, but again underpowered and overpriced and you'll probably get bored of that look quickly, The Scout is cool and fast and TINY, chick bike.
Victory, overpriced and way to much plastic
BMW, not my style,
Metric cruisers, just cant do it.
Moto Guzzi, me like a lot. Again overpriced and no dealer network. Good luck needing a stepper motor for that.
Harley D, if you spend 35K it's a good bike. But there's one on every corner and I would never blend in with that crowd

Back to Triumph, they are great bikes even with their quirks, Cool Factor 10 !!

Hang in there, make friends with the techs and ask for the tech you like. Demand, (in a professional manner) they get it right.
If the SM cant satisfy you, go straight to the GM
