Hi everyone. I wanted to post my experience with installing protective paint film. I know that Triumph sells a kit for this. But I'm cheap and I wanted to try it myself. So I bought an 18" x 36" section on ebay for $34.

The first thing I did was remove the speedo and the seat. I wanted the film to go under both of these if possible. I cleaned everything with wax and grease remover.

Next, I made a template out of butcher paper. I went back and forth on how big to make it and tried a few different design. Originally, I wanted to cover the fuel cap area. It didn't seem like I'd bought enough film, so I decided not to do this. Also, to obtain the right symmetry, I traced out one side only and used that as a template for both sides.

Here's the finished product. This was my first attempt at this and I made some mistakes. You can't be too clean. I have a couple of dirt specks that found their way in and I didn't notice them until late in the game. Also, I wanted the film to extend under the tank and around the back corners. I think those curves are more than the film can manage. The under side of the tank didn't come out too good. I'm not sure how to trim it other than to redo the whole thing. Overall, I'm happy given the price. It wasn't really hard other than determining where to end the cuts. I can now use my magnetic tank bag without worrying about scratches. This took me about 4 hours from start to finish. Not bad.

Nice job...would have been better if you posted this in the How-to section.

All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses, his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind.

Maybe. Not much "How to" from me. I Just wanted to share results and costs. If a moderator wishes to move it, it's ok with me.
